What: The Urban Photonic Sandtable Display allows up to 20 participants to view and manipulate the 3-D image on a table without using 3-D glasses. The holographic table can be expanded to about six feet and has a visual depth of up to 12 inches. It can also rotate, zoom and free images as well as print out 2-D representations allowing troops to use them during missions.
Who: The Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency began funding this project in 2005, and the imaging is created by a company called Zebra.
The Future: Zebra also hopes to release the technology in the entertainment and gaming markets. For now, however, this technology is not ready for the field, although UPSD is currently being installed in Army and Air Force research centers.
