The No. 14 Virginia baseball team suffered one of its worst defeats ever at Davenport Field to Liberty yesterday, 8-0, snapping a streak of 28 consecutive wins in midweek home games.
The Flames (9-1) ended the Cavaliers' (5-2-1) four-game winning streak, allowing just two hits to a team fresh off a 44-hit weekend in a three-game demolition of Monmouth.
Liberty took the lead in the third inning off a single by junior catcher Tyler Cox, who advanced into scoring position on a throwing error. Junior infielder Bryan Aanderud made Virginia pay with a single to push the Flames lead to 2-0.
Liberty chased Virginia sophomore starter Artie Lewicki in the fourth by opening the inning with three consecutive extra base hits. Lewicki was charged with four earned runs on five hits in more than three innings of work to take the loss.
Liberty put the game out of reach on a critical error by senior second basemen Keith Werman, one of four errors on the day for Virginia. With the bases loaded and two outs in the sixth, Werman mishandled a throw from junior shortstop Chis Taylor which allowed one run to come home. The Flames then extended the lead to 8-0 on a two-run single by junior first basemen Trey Wimmer.
Liberty junior reliever Blake Forslund, a former Cavalier who transferred after the 2009 season, was masterful out of the bullpen. He tossed 3.2 no-hit innings, striking out five to earn the win.
