Matmen host first home meet

After more than six months away from the mat, the No. 14 Virginia men’s wrestling team returns Saturday to host a season-opening meet against Anderson (S.C), Ohio and Chattanooga.

The Cavaliers closed last season by finishing second at ACC Championships and qualifying six wrestlers for the NCAA Tournament.

At the tournament, Virginia’s Derek Valenti and Chris Henrich received All-American honors, at the 149 pound and 174 pound weight classes respectively. Valenti and Henrich’s efforts led Virginia to a tie with Purdue for 28th place.

Valenti, a redshirt senior, returns to lead the highly talented 2012 squad. Redshirt junior Jon Fausey also returns to defend his title of ACC champion at 184 pounds.

Saturday’s match should be more of a tune up than a challenge to the Cavaliers. Ohio is projected to finish near the bottom of the Mid-American Conference. Anderson, a Division-Two program, enters the meet ranked 10th in its region. Chattanooga, the preseason favorite in the Southern Conference, will likely pose the greatest threat to the Cavaliers.

The quad meet begins 9 a.m. Saturday at Memorial Gymnasium.
