Faculty Senate debates Strategic Plan

Adams to present advice to Board of Visitors next month

The Faculty Senate held its first full meeting of the year Tuesday evening to discuss issues ranging from tech support to the University’s strategic plan.

Senior Vice Provost Milton Adams presented the strategic plan as drafted by the Strategic Planning Steering Committee chaired by President Teresa Sullivan. The plan seeks to assess the University’s strengths and weaknesses, set priorities and craft a vision for the University’s future, according to the planning website, and is subject to approval by the Board of Visitors.

“We have a current draft, it will have one, maybe two more revisions,” Adams said. “It’s going to the Board on Nov. 14.”

Adams said the Committee had three goals to consider when making final revisions to the plan, including a “better alignment between the schools’ plans and the university’s plan,” an alignment of philanthropy goals with University plans and the creation of “a set of aspirational goals for this University in its third century.”

Adams asked faculty for assistance in multiple areas, including aligning school goals with those of the University, facilitating the implementation of new cross-school initiatives, removing barriers faculty face to carrying out their own research and developing new research infrastructure.

Faculty later broke into round table discussions, where representatives from a mix of departments joined together to discuss those four issues. After nearly an hour of discussion, each table was asked to present their findings to the entire Senate.

Faculty expressed concerns about possible financial and administrative changes.

“I think it’s important that this not be turned into a zero-sum game,” Media Studies Prof. Bruce Williams said. “Anything that even smacks of taking autonomy and authority away from departments in the college is going to be resisted.”

Adams will present Senate concerns and advice to the Board along with the revised Strategic Plan for final consideration on Nov. 14.
