Fire department responds to mysterious package

All clear given, envelope determined to be plant fertilizer sticks

The fire department responded to a report of a suspicious package at Carruthers Hall at 3:15 p.m. Monday. An emergency text alert and email was sent to the student body instructing them to avoid the area. An all clear was issued at 3:37 p.m.

“[University police] and Charlottesville Fire and Hazmat responded to the scene and quickly determined the substance to be non-hazardous,” University spokesperson Anthony deBruyn said in an email.

The substance was determined to be two plant fertilizer sticks in an envelope.
