No. 1 Women's Soccer remains perfect

Cavaliers shutout Wake Forest, 2-0

The top-ranked Virginia women’s soccer team remained the nation’s only unbeaten and untied team with a 2-0 victory against No. 11 Wake Forest Sunday. It was the first time in four attempts that the Cavaliers were able to depart Winston-Salem victorious.

For much of the first half, the Cavaliers (14-0, 8-0 ACC) were deadlocked in a defensive struggle with the Demon Deacons (8-3-2, 3-3-2 ACC); the two teams combined for just six shots in the opening period. But in the 36th minute, sophomore forward Brittany Ratcliffe finished a cross from senior defender Shasta Fisher with an uncontested header just outside the six-yard box. The goal marked Ratcliffe’s team-leading eighth goal of the season.

Virginia wasted virtually no time doubling its lead; in the 41st minute, standout freshman midfielder Alexis Shaffer tallied her third goal of the season. Sophomore defender Emily Sonnett’s header off a corner from senior forward Amber Fry found Shaffer at the far post, who tapped it in for the easy goal.

The Cavaliers relied on their stingy defense the rest of the way, allowing a total of just three shots — only one was on frame. Sunday’s match marks the Virginia defense’s eighth shutout of the season, five of which have come behind freshman Morgan Stearns in goal.

Virginia continues its three-game road trip against NC State Thursday at 7 p.m.
