Police respond to weekend sexual assault

Incident occurred near Grounds on Chancellor Street

Charlottesville Police responded to a sexual assault in the 100 block of Chancellor Street around 2:40 a.m. Saturday.

The male suspect had fled the scene before the police arrived, but was identified by police as an 18-year-old male. He is not believed to be a University student.

According to an email sent to the student body by University Police Chief Michael Gibson, the Charlottesville Police Department “[does] not believe the suspect poses a threat to the U.Va. or Charlottesville community.” The incident remains under investigation.

Charlottesville Police Lieut. Steve Upman said they would not release any more details about the incident at this time.
