Cavalier runners shatter records in Boston

Select members of the Virginia track and field team competed in Boston, Massachusetts at the John Thomas Terrier Classic over the weekend. A number of East Coast schools participated in the meet in both field and running events, but the Cavaliers took part only in the latter.

Friday — the first day of action — featured the women’s team. Senior sprinter Jordan Lavender had a memorable afternoon, shattering her own school record in the 200-meter dash with a time of 23.84 seconds and securing a first-place finish.

Lavender, freshman Kiana Hairston and sophomores Andrea Wright and Chimere Ezumah went on to win the 4x400-meter relay with a time of 3:41.26 — the fourth fastest mark in school history.

Other top-five finishers on Friday included Ezumah, third in the 500 meter, and graduate students Vanessa Fabrizio and Morgan Kelly, who placed fourth and fifth in the 800 and 3000-meter respectively.

The men’s team responded with another positive performance on Saturday. Senior Payton Hazzard surpassed the school record in the 400-meter dash with a time of 46.60 seconds, earning him a second-place finish.

Virginia also dominated the men’s mile with three runners placing in the top five. Junior Kyle King took fifth in 4:02.15 and sophomore Henry Wynne placed third at 4:00.28, but both were overshadowed by sophomore Mike Marsella’s sub-four minute time of 3:59.97 and first-place finish,

The Cavaliers will make a trip southeast to Blacksburg, Virginia Feb. 5 for the Doc Hale VT Elite Meet.
