The No. 5 Virginia women’s tennis team kicked off their spring break by sweeping a doubleheader on March 8. The Cavaliers extended their win streak to six games by beating No. 57 Florida State 6-1 and George Washington 6-0.
Opening the day against the Seminoles (7-5, 1-3 ACC), Virginia (11-2, 4-0 ACC) easily secured the doubles point with an 8-1 win on court three and an 8-2 win on court one. The Cavaliers carried that momentum throughout the rest of the match winning five of the six singles matches.
No. 108 junior Maci Epstein won on court five after her opponent retired after the first set. On court three, No. 27 junior Stephanie Nauta recorded a 6-2, 6-2 win while No. 1 junior Julia Elbaba posted a 6-1, 6-1 win on court one. No. 32 junior Danielle Collins won 6-3, 6-2 on court two and freshman Cassie Mercer won 6-3, 7-6 on court six. Virginia’s only loss came on court four where junior Skylar Morton fell 7-5, 6-4.
The Cavaliers only played singles against the Colonials (4-8), and Virginia cruised to a 6-0 victory. Sophomore Marie Faure, Mercer, Epstein, Morton, Collins, and Elbaba all posted victories in the match.
The Cavaliers will play again Friday at No. 15 Clemson.
