Student Council held their first general body meeting with new members Tuesday night.
New members should not consider themselves observers, President Abraham Axler, a third-year College student, said in a welcome message emphasizing the inclusive goals Student Council. Representative Body Chair Erik Roberts, a second-year College student, also encouraged new members to speak up with community concerns.
A variety of community concerns were discussed at the meeting.
Fourth-year Engineering student Lia Cattaneo suggested implementing a program at the University similar to a program at Columbia University through which students can donate textbooks to the University library, where low-income students can then check them out for a full semester.
The program would provide free books to students who otherwise may not be able to have them, Catteneo said.
College Representative Luke Williams, a second-year student, said there will be a presentation on a new textbook-exchange app next week.
Student Council also addressed concerns from new members regarding the search for off-Grounds housing.
Members highlighted upcoming events — such as a housing seminar in Alumni Hall Wednesday and the first-year housing fair Oct. 13 — to help answer questions about off-Grounds housing, and discussed the possible need for more comprehensive housing resources to be made available earlier in the semester.
The Public Service Committee is compiling an aggregate list of volunteering opportunities at the University and in greater Charlottesville, said Co-Chair and second-year College student Sarah Kenny. These will be mainly one-time opportunities for students who are unable to commit to a semester with Madison House or other service organization.
“This will increase student awareness of all service groups on Grounds,” Kenny said. “Hopefully we’ll have a much better resource for students regarding that” by the end of the year.
