Led by a season-high 16 points from senior center Mike Tobey, fifth-ranked Virginia basketball surged past Oakland Wednesday night, 71-58.
Tobey’s outburst was the first double-digit scoring game for the Monroe, N.Y. native since he scored 14 in an 83-66 victory over George Mason in the championship game of the Charleston Classic Nov. 22.
The Golden Grizzlies (8-5, 0-0 Horizon League) carried a 29-28 edge over the Cavaliers (11-1, 0-0 ACC) entering halftime. Junior point guard Kay Felder, Oakland’s leading scorer, tallied 17 points on 6-of-14 shooting with three assists in the first half.
Virginia roared out of the half and outscored the Golden Grizzlies 43-29 in the second. The Cavaliers shot 57.1 percent after the break after connecting on 33.3 percent of their shots in the first.
Senior forward Anthony Gill scored 13 in the second on 5-of-6 shooting. Gill finished the game with 17 points and five rebounds.
Tobey was right behind Gill with 16 points and made seven of his eight attempts.
Senior guard Malcolm Brogdon again struggled from the field, going 3-for-14. The preseason co-ACC Player of the Year is now 6-for-26 in his last two games.
Felder, who came into the game averaging 26.6 points and 9.3 assists per game, led all scorers with 30 points on 45 percent shooting; no other Golden Grizzly broke double digits. As a team, Oakland shot 37.3 percent from the floor.
Virginia opens conference play Saturday with a home contest against Notre Dame.
