Student Council heard from University dining about the potential renovation of Alderman Cafe and areas surrounding Runk Dining Hall.

Student Council held its first general body meeting of the semester Tuesday night, addressing a number of updates including University safety initiatives and service and art on Grounds.

University Dining members initially discussed three upcoming renovations and requested input from Student Council members.

The first renovation involves the potential conversion of the Alderman Cafe area into a Starbucks, scheduled for this summer. This renovation is pending final approval, which will be decided Friday.

The Starbucks in the library will assume the seating currently in front of Alderman Cafe, resulting in a loss of about 15 seats.

Other planned renovations include improving accessibility to services such as the convenience store in Runk Dining Hall in the summer of 2017 and increasing the seating capacity of The Castle in the summer of 2018.

Following the dining presentation, fourth-year College student Rachel Murphy — a Safety and Wellness Committee co-chair — discussed safety initiatives on the Corner.

Murphy said the police substation located on the Corner is now officially manned 24 hours a day.

“This has been a problem area for a long time because it’s not really well-lit,” she said.

Further safety initiatives include the crosswalk next to the Bank of America on the Corner, which is set to become a flashing beacon crosswalk, Murphy said. The project will cost approximately $35,000.

Student Council members also discussed redesigning the focus of Project Serve in order to make the program a more comprehensive experience for first-year students. Public Service Committee Co-Chair Sarah Kenny, a second-year College student, said the program currently allows students to participate in a community service experience early in their first year.

“We want to focus on what type of service they’re interested in throughout their first-year and college experience instead of isolated incidents,” Kenny said.

The Student Arts Committee spoke on its ongoing effort to ensure student art is displayed in as many locations as possible. Student Council President and third-year College student Abraham Axler expressed full support for the effort.

“We have 500 buildings here,” Axler said. “I want to be overwhelmed by the amount of student art.”
