If Clinton is elected president, McAuliffe would appoint someone to fill Kaine's seat until a special election could be held in 2017.

Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton announced Sen. Tim Kaine as her vice presidential pick Friday on Twitter.

Kaine served as governor of Virginia from 2006-10 and was elected to the U.S. Senate in 2012 as Virginia’s junior senator, serving alongside Mark Warner, under whom Kaine previously served as lieutenant governor.

The presumptive vice presidential nominee served as chair of the Democratic National Committee from 2009-11 and prior to his term as governor, Kaine served as Virginia’s lieutenant governor from 2002-06 and as mayor of Richmond from 1998-2001.
