Junior forward Lauren Moses scored a career-high 27 points in a 63-56 win against Richmond Wednesday night.

The Virginia women’s basketball team survived a second-half comeback from Richmond (0-2) Wednesday night to grind out a 63-56 win on the road.

The Cavaliers’ (3-0) efficient first half gave the team a 35-20 halftime advantage, placing them in prime position to put away the Spiders in the second half. But Richmond came out of the break firing, putting up 21 points in the third quarter on Virginia to close the gap for the final period.

The Spiders tied the game on a jumper by junior forward Alicia Hudalla with 2:08 left in the fourth quarter. However, the resilient Cavaliers retook the lead on a score from junior forward Lauren Moses, and following a defensive stop, junior guard J’Kyra Brown hit a dagger three-pointer to silence the Spiders. Virginia made its free throws down the stretch to escape Richmond with a victory.

Moses had the game of her career, dropping a career-high 27 points on a night where the rest of Virginia’s players went cold from the field. She was 9-for-9 from the free throw line, with four of those makes coming in the closing minute to seal the game.

After two dominant wins, Virginia grinded out a third on a night where not everything clicked to preserve its strong start to the season. The Cavaliers head back to Charlottesville this weekend to face Rutgers (0-2) Sunday at 6 p.m.
