Softball

What: Virginia (10-13, 2-4 ACC) vs. NC State

When: Friday to Sunday

Where: Raleigh, N.C.

The Skinny: After a midweek doubleheader against James Madison University was postponed, the Virginia softball team is ready to get back in action with an ACC matchup against NC State (8-16, 2-1 ACC).

The Cavaliers will face a conference opponent for the first time on the road this season, and they will also look to claim their first ACC series of the season in Raleigh.

Last weekend, Virginia emerged from a three-game series against Boston College with only one win. Despite dropping the series, the Cavaliers’ upperclassmen showed promising signs of potential. In Virginia’s lone win against the Eagles (14-11, 2-1 ACC), junior pitcher and outfielder Allison Davis and senior catcher Katie Park generated the offense, with each player going two-for-three, getting a double and scoring a run.

Meanwhile, the Wolfpack enters the weekend after defeating Syracuse in a three-game series. After winning the first game and then dropping the second game, NC State clinched the series with a thrilling 8-7 win against the Orange (15-8, 1-2 ACC). The game was decided in the seventh inning, when junior second baseman Macauley Prickett hit a walk-off double to get the win for NC State. Senior Tyler Ross, who currently has three home runs and 15 runs batted in for the season, also played an important role in securing the series for the Wolfpack with her two RBIs in the game.

After Virginia’s matchup against NC State, the Cavaliers return to Charlottesville for a midweek game against Towson and a weekend series against ACC opponent Florida State.

Men’s Tennis

What: No. 3 Virginia (14-0, 1-0 ACC) vs. Notre Dame (8-5, 1-1 ACC)

Where: South Bend, Ind.

When: 2 p.m. Saturday

The Skinny: No. 3 Virginia is set to kick off its first outdoor match of the season at Notre Dame this weekend. Returning to collegiate play for the first time after winning the ITA Indoor Championship title in February, the Cavaliers will look to continue building momentum gained from winter Futures tournaments. Senior Thai-Son Kwiatkowski picked up his fourth professional title in Toulouse over Virginia’s spring break, and four other Cavaliers succeeded in qualifying before falling in the main draw of their Futures tournaments.

On Saturday, Virginia will present an intimidating lineup to face the Fighting Irish. Kwiatkowski will be a threat in both singles and doubles with doubles partner junior Alexander Ritschard. After an impressive performance in winter tournaments, senior J.C. Aragone will also be dangerous against Notre Dame.

The Fighting Irish will attempt to regroup from Saturday’s 4-3 loss to Louisville — a team the Cavaliers easily defeated 7-0 in February.

With the No. 1 ranking in sight, Virginia will use this match to give a strong showing against Notre Dame and to prepare to face No. 2 Wake Forest at the end of the month.
