Senior attacker Posey Valis led the Cavaliers with four goals in their 13-12 victory over Louisville.

The No. 3 seed Virginia women’s lacrosse team was able to come out ahead in overtime against No. 6 seed Louisville in the quarterfinals of the ACC Tournament, making multiple clutch goals to move on to the next round.

Virginia (10-7, 4-3 ACC), while unable to replicate its stifling defense it showed in its previous matchup against the Cardinals (11-6, 3-4 ACC), was able to make big plays on offense that helped the Cavaliers keep pace with Louisville's high-powered offense.

The first half of the match was a shootout, with both teams answering back for goals and preventing any big leads from forming. Louisville was able to find the back of the net first, with a scoring opportunity created by a ground ball recovery and later a well-placed shot by junior attacker Madison Hoover. The Cardinals went on to score again off of a free-position shot, but the Cavaliers answered back with three-consecutive goals. This was then answered back with a 3-0 run by Louisville. Virginia was able to make up a one-point deficit to tie the game at halftime thanks to a goal scored in the last 30 seconds by senior attacker Posey Valis.

Virginia was able to build up an early lead in the second half, finding good looks to score on three-consecutive possessions. While it appeared that Virginia had Lousiville all figured out on both sides of the field, a 4-0 run by the Cardinals proved otherwise.

Unable to score for 16 minutes in the second half, Virginia gave up its lead. However, the Cavaliers senior attacker Kelly Reese scored a critical goal scored by at the end of regulation that put the game into overtime.

In overtime, the Cavaliers won the opening draw, and junior midfielder Kasey Behr scored the game-winning goal shortly thereafter — securing a 13-12 victory and a ticket to the semifinal round of the ACC tournament where they will face off against No. 2 seed Syracuse.
