The Excel Inn and Suites on Emmet Street caught on fire Thursday afternoon.

Fire crews responded to the scene just after it was reported around 4 p.m.

Firefighters were stationed on either side of the building both on Emmet Street and on Carr’s Hill Field.

The fire also visibly spread as flames appeared out of a side annex of the building.

Guests were evacuated from the hotel and the cause of the fire is currently unknown.

The building appears to have sustained significant damage, as portions of the roof have collapsed. Pieces of debris and broken windows littered the ground surrounding the building, and smoke covered the sky on Emmet Street.

Officials blocked off traffic on Emmet Street as crews responded.

The hotel is located at 140 Emmet Street and is adjacent to Carr’s Hill Field.

The fire is still under investigation.
