Women’s Soccer

What: No. 15 Virginia vs. Pittsburgh

When: Sunday at 1 p.m.

Where: Ambrose Urbanic Field in Pittsburgh, Pa.

The Skinny:

The Virginia women’s soccer team is back in action after an entire week without any games, as the Cavaliers (6-3-2, 1-1-1 ACC) head to Pittsburgh for an ACC matchup.

The Cavaliers come into the match with their most recent game as a 2-1 loss to then-No. 8 North Carolina. Virginia junior midfielder Montana Sutton was the lone goal scorer for Virginia against the Tar Heels (7-2-0, 3-0-0 ACC). Sophomore forward Taylor Ziemer had the assist on Sutton’s goal, and currently leads the team in points with three goals and three assists. Freshman forward Taryn Torres also has three goals this season.

Meanwhile, Pittsburgh (3-5-3, 0-2-1 ACC) enters the match having yet to win an ACC game this season. Last week, Pittsburgh fell to No. 4 Duke.

The Panthers’ offense is fronted by junior forward Taylor Pryce who has three goals and two assists on the season.

When the two teams squared off last year, the Cavaliers picked up a dominating 6-0 win. Ziemer had two goals and two assists in the match.

After Sunday’s match, Virginia will be back in Charlottesville to host No. 22 Notre Dame Thursday night.

Men’s Soccer

What: Virginia vs. Notre Dame

When: Friday at 7:30 p.m.

Where: Alumni Stadium in South Bend, Ind.

The Skinny: After a crazy two-goal comeback victory at Klöckner Stadium, the No. 10 Cavaliers take on No. 7 Notre Dame for one of the biggest matchups of the season.

Virginia (6-1-1, 1-1-1 ACC) looks to get back on track against ACC opponents after suffering its recent defeat against No. 5 North Carolina. The Irish (6-2-0, 2-1-0 ACC) were the top team in the nation before their recent defeat to unranked Virginia Tech.

The Cavaliers nearly blew a great opportunity on Monday night, giving up the first goal to unranked Davidson before coming back in the second half. It took a last second 89th-minute shot from Virginia junior midfielder Jean-Christophe Koffi — which was deflected into the net by sophomore midfielder Ryan Peterson — to clinch the win.

Two red cards were handed out in the Monday night showdown, and Friday night should provide just as much excitement and possibly more scrums.

Notre Dame will be ready to go, coming off a tough loss to No. 1 Indiana. The Irish were held scoreless and will look to find the scoreboard often in front of their home crowd.

The battle begins at 7:30 p.m. Friday at Alumni Stadium in South Bend, Ind.
