The Virginia women’s basketball team (9-14, 3-7 ACC) beat Boston College 79-77 in overtime Thursday night at John Paul Jones Arena. The Cavaliers set a season high in points, scoring 79 against the Eagles.
Boston College freshman guard Makayla Dickens shot 7-11 from three point range, recording 24 points to lead her team as the Eagles shot 50 percent from three.
Virginia took a 12-10 lead with 5 minutes remaining in the first on a layup by junior forward Lisa Jablonowski and would not relinquish it until the third quarter. Freshman guard Erica Martinsen hit a three-pointer with 17 seconds to go to put the Cavaliers ahead by six going into the second.
The Cavaliers led by 13 points at the half, 37-24. Two Virginia players had already hit double figures by the halftime buzzer, as senior forward Mone Jones had 12 and junior forward Jocelyn Willoughby had 10. Willoughby posted a double-double with a career-high 26 points and 11 rebounds. Jones matched her career-high of 12 points in the first half alone against Boston College.
Boston College opened the second half on a 10-0 run, including three-pointers from Dickens and freshman guard Marnelle Garraud. The Eagles eventually took the lead, 49-48, on another three from Garraud with 2:11 remaining in the period.
Willoughby tied the game up at 52 apiece with 31 seconds remaining in the third. Boston College sophomore guard Sydney Lowery committed a traveling violation to give the ball back to Virginia with 2.6 seconds remaining in the quarter, but Virginia was unable to get a shot up in time before time ran out.
Martinsen fouled Boston College sophomore forward Milan Bolden-Morris on the first possession of the fourth, and Bolden-Morris hit both free throws to put the Eagles back ahead. The two teams traded leads throughout the quarter before Dickens was fouled by Jones with 1:58 to play. Dickens sank one free throw to make Boston College lead 62-60.
The Eagles maintained their two-point lead until Dickens fouled Virginia junior guard Dominique Toussaint with 19 seconds left, and Toussaint made both her free throws to send the game to overtime.
Virginia never trailed in overtime as Willoughby scored eight points for the Cavaliers while Toussaint scored six to defeat Boston College, 79-77.
Virginia next plays at home Sunday against Duke. The two teams will tip off at 2:00 p.m. at John Paul Jones Arena.
