The Virginia women’s basketball team (8-14, 2-7 ACC) lost 72-59 on the road against Miami (19-5, 7-2 ACC) Sunday afternoon for their third consecutive defeat.
Junior small forward Jocelyn Willoughby led the Cavaliers in scoring with 16 points, while junior forward Lisa Jablonowski and junior guard Dominique Toussaint each chipped in nine. Jablonowski led Virginia in rebounds with seven.
Less than three minutes into the game, the Hurricanes were already up by double digits, 13-2, as they scored on seven of their first eight possessions of the game. Miami took a 12-point lead into the second quarter after making nine free throws in the first half.
The Hurricanes maintained that advantage at the half but pulled even further away in the third quarter. Miami junior forward Beatrice Mompremier scored 14 points in the third. The Hurricanes led by as many as 18 with 34 seconds to go in the period, but Virginia sophomore guard Khyasia Caldwell hit two free throws with 4 seconds to go to cut the deficit to 16 entering the fourth.
The Cavaliers never led at any point in the game but did outscore Miami 22-19 in the fourth quarter behind three-pointers from Willoughby, Caldwell and freshman guard Erica Martinsen.
Mompremier posted a game-leading 24 points. Senior center Emese Hof scored 18, and sophomore guard Kelsey Marshall scored 17 off the bench for Miami. Marshall went 5-5 on field goals, all of which came from the three point range.
Virginia returns home Thursday night to face Boston College. The two teams will face off at 7 p.m. at John Paul Jones Arena.
