Student Council holds final general body meeting of the New Era administration

In the final meeting of the Liu administration, Student Council confirmed Eugene Choo as chair of Rules and Ethics Board and approved ten new CIOs

Student Council held the last meeting of its current administration led by Abel Liu, outgoing Student Council president and fourth-year College student, Tuesday evening. Following a leadership spotlight presentation, the representative body confirmed second-year College student Eugene Choo as chair of the Rules and Ethics Board and approved 10 new CIOs.

The meeting began with farewell wishes and statements of appreciation from the outgoing executive board. 

“It has been an honor serving as your Student Council president and I could not be more excited to welcome the incoming team,” Liu said. “They are going to be fantastic, amazing, show stopping, 13 out of 10 — it's gonna be awesome.”

Student Council then heard a presentation from first-year Engineering student Betsy Altenburger and second-year College student Krit Chanwong as part of a leadership spotlight. Altenburger and Chanwong presented the results of their larger analysis of the Charlottesville housing market. The results of the study described an expected continued increase in housing prices within the Charlottesville area in the next 12 to 24 months. 

Student Council then entered legislative session. The first piece of legislation entertained was SB22-08, A Bill to Approve Newly Created Contracted Independent Organizations. The bill was was sponsored by Ryan Cieslukowski, outgoing vice president for operations and third-year Batten student, and presented 10 prospective CIOs for approval. 

“We definitely look over these applications thoroughly to make sure that they meet all the requirements, that there’s evidence of sustainability and involvement and we feel that all of these organizations meet those guidelines,” Cieslukowski said.

The bill passed with 16 votes in favor and no votes against or abstentions.

The representative body then entertained SB22-09, A Bill to Approve an Appointment to the Chair of the Rules and Ethics Board. The bill was sponsored by Ceci Cain, outgoing vice president for administration and fourth-year College student. The bill appointed Eugene Choo as chair of the Rules and Ethics Board. 

“I'm very excited for him to step into this role,” Cain said. “I think he's going to do a great job in the next year of being the chair of our Rules and Ethics board and keeping us on procedure.” 

This bill passed with 15 votes in favor and no votes against or abstentions.

Student Council holds weekly meetings on Tuesdays at 6:30 p.m. in the South Meeting Room in Newcomb Hall. The next meeting will be the first meeting led by Cain’s incoming administration.
