Three members of the Virginia men’s tennis team competed in the ITA Men’s All-American Championships from Wednesday through Sunday in Tulsa, Okla. Meanwhile, the women’s team traveled to Cary, N.C. to compete in the ITA Women’s All-American Championships, which was held from Oct. 1 through Sunday.
Both tournaments were a 64-player draw, with 48 of the qualifiers based on pre-tournament factors such as preseason rankings. The remainder of the players came from the qualifying tournament that took place prior to the main draw.
Men’s tennis
Juniors Iñaki Montes and Chris Rodesch entered the tournament in the 3-seed and 6-seed spots of the main draw, respectively. Junior Jeffrey von der Schulenburg also entered the tournament and is currently ranked No. 21. In 2021, Rodesch and graduate student Ryan Goetz won the consolation doubles title and was the runner up in the consolation singles bracket.
Rodesch went up against UCLA sophomore Alexander Hoogmartens, winning 6-4, 6-0. He continued his streak, beating Florida freshman Jonah Braswell 6-4, 6-1. After advancing to the round of 16, he fell 6-2, 6-3 to Georgia graduate student Philip Henning.
Von der Schulenburg managed to pull an upset in his tournament opener, taking down No. 5 Ole Miss senior Nikola Slavic 7-5, 6-3, but then lost to North Carolina graduate student Ryan Seggerman 6-3, 6-1 in the next round.
Montes was defeated 6-1, 6-4 by Tennessee graduate student Emile Hudd in his first round. In the consolation round he lost to Stanford freshman Nishesh Basavareddy 6-4, 7-6.
The Cavaliers will look for another chance to compete at the ITF World Tennis Tour in Harlingen, Texas from Monday to Oct. 23.
Women’s tennis
Six members of the team competed, with freshman Annabelle Xu, sophomore Melodie Collard and junior Sara Ziodato playing in the pre-qualifying tournament, graduate student Julia Adams and sophomore Elaine Chervinsky playing in the qualifying tournament and senior Natasha Subhash playing in the main draw.
Additionally, Adams and Xu played doubles qualifying and Subhash and Chervinsky played in the main doubles draw.
In the main draw, Subhash beat No. 8 senior Elizabeth Scotty of North Carolina 6-4, 6-4 before falling to LSU junior Kylie Collins 6-1, 6-1 in the round of 16.
In doubles, Subhash and Chervinsky beat senior Carolyn Ansari and junior Ariana Arseneault of Auburn 3-6, 6-4, 13-11, senior Anna Ross and junior Holly Staff of Vanderbilt 7-6, 5-7, 10-7 and freshman Nikita Vishwase and redshirt freshman Anastasiya Komar of LSU 2-6, 6-1, 10-7 in the main doubles draw, advancing to the semifinals, before withdrawing from the tournament.
In singles qualifying, Adams lost her opening match while Chervinsky won two matches before losing to South Carolina senior Ayana Akli 6-2, 6-1 in the qualifying final.
Adams and Xu won two matches to advance to the doubles qualifying final where they beat Iowa State seniors Thasaporn Naklo and Chie Kezuka 8-7 to advance to the main draw. Adams and Xu were then beaten in the opening round of the main draw by graduate student Nell Miller and junior Amelai Rajecki of NC State 5-7, 7-6, 10-7. They fell into the consolation bracket where they won one match before being eliminated.
Xu advanced to the second round in pre-qualifying singles before being beaten, and Ziodato lost in the pre-qualifying final. Collard won two matches to advance from pre-qualifying to qualifying before losing her opening match 6-3, 6-2 to Texas A&M graduate student Jayci Goldsmith.
Ziodato and Collard advanced from doubles pre-qualifying to doubles qualifying after winning two matches. They then lost their opening match in qualifying 8-6 to sophomore Kimmi Hance and freshman Fangran Tian from UCLA.
The Cavaliers next compete in the ITA Atlantic Regional from Oct. 20 to Oct. 24 in Blacksburg.
