A complete team performance pushed No. 2 Virginia to a resounding win over Boston College to open ACC play.

In their first ACC conference dual match of the season, No. 2 Virginia delivered a cold 7-0 sweep of Boston College. Competing outdoors versus the Eagles (4-3, 0-1 ACC) at the Virginia Tennis Facility at the Boar’s Head Resort for the first time this season, the Cavaliers (9-2, 1-0 ACC) adjusted their lineup in the absence of junior Dylan Dietrich and did not drop a set en route to a decisive conference-opening victory.

Virginia secured the doubles point with two dominant performances.

At Line 2, sophomore pairing of Stiles Brockett and Keegan Rice paired together in Dietrich’s absence and quickly found rhythm against Boston College junior Matthew Overvelde and senior Aidan Pack. Rice was aggressive at the net, cutting off angles with poaches, while Brockett anchored from the baseline with heavy forehands. The duo broke serve twice early and never looked back, closing out a 6-1 victory as the first match off court.

Moments later, the No. 29 doubles pairing of sophomore Jangjun Kim and senior Mans Dahlberg sealed the doubles point with another clean 6-1 win at Line 1 over Boston College sophomore Liam O’Leary and junior Matvey Greschner. Kim’s returns neutralized their opponent’s serve, consistently setting up Dahlberg to finish points at the net.

At Line 3, senior Ty Switzer stepped into the lineup with freshman Andres Santamarta Roig against Boston College sophomore Lukas Rais and freshman Luke Levanat. The match was abandoned at 4-2 after Virginia clinched the point.

This momentum was carried into singles, with six straight wins.

Kim, ranked No. 80 nationally, was first off the court in singles at Line 2. Facing Greschner, Kim controlled rallies from the baseline, using his reliable forehand to open the court before finishing points with changes in direction. He earned an early break in each set by attacking second serves and stepping inside the baseline on returns. Kim protected his own service games comfortably, earning a 6-2, 6-2 victory quickly and extending Virginia’s lead in its first ACC dual match.

Shortly after, No. 24 Santamarta Roig dispatched Carioscia 6-2, 6-1 at Line 3. The freshman’s heavy topspin forehand pushed Carioscia deep behind the baseline, forcing the Eagle to defend behind the court and opening angles for clean winners. Santamarta Roig dictated with depth and spin, mixing crosscourt exchanges with sharp down-the-line shots to keep Carioscia off balance.

Brockett clinched the match at Line 4 with a 6-4, 6-1 victory over Overvelde. After a tight first set featuring extended baseline exchanges, Brockett elevated his level in the second set, stepping inside the baseline to attack second serves and finish at the net. His aggressive play and improved serve placement allowed him to pull away and secure the team win.

With the match win secured, play continued on the top court, where No. 12 Rice defeated senior Mai Gao 6-3, 6-1. Rice’s first serves set up short balls throughout the match, allowing him to attack and transition forward. Rice controlled the center of the court and kept Gao on the defensive throughout rallies. Rice tightened his game in the second set to close efficiently in straight sets.

At Line 6, senior Douglas Yaffa, inserted into the singles lineup with Dietrich absent, earned a composed 6-4, 6-3 win over Levanat. Yaffa absorbed pressure with consistent depth and capitalized on break-point opportunities with patient point construction. He broke late in the first set and maintained a high first-serve percentage in the second.

Dahlberg completed the sweep at Line 5 with a 7-6(1), 6-3 win over Rais. The opening set remained tight with strong serving on both sides before Dahlberg dominated the tiebreak with precise placement and forehands. Carrying that momentum into the second set, he broke early by attacking Rais’ second serve. Dahlber maintained control from the baseline to close out the  match and finalize the 7-0 result outdoors.

Virginia closed out its first ACC dual of the season with a complete team performance, improving to 9-2 overall and 1-0 in conference play while continuing to defend home court. The Cavaliers will look to carry that momentum into Sunday’s matchup, hosting No. 38 SMU at noon in another ACC contest.
