In its final road trip of the regular season, No. 9 Virginia earned two strong West Coast wins, beating No. 23 California 4-1 Friday before sweeping No. 36 Stanford Sunday. With the two victories, the Cavaliers (17-4, 10-0 ACC) extended their ACC record to 10-0, with two home duals remaining in the regular season.
Against the Golden Bears (10-5, 7-3 ACC), Virginia took a competitive doubles point with wins on Lines 2 and 3. Sophomore Isabelle Lacy and freshman Katie Rolls kicked off the weekend with a 6-4 win on Court 3 — their seventh victory as a pairing — before No. 27 senior Annabelle Xu and sophomore Martina Genis Salas made it a 1-1 dual with a tight 7-5 win. The doubles point win left Line 1 unfinished, where No. 6 graduate student Melodie Collard and junior Vivian Yang were in the midst of a tiebreak, tied 6-6.
The Cavaliers quickly made it a 2-0 dual in singles play, as No. 83 Rolls secured a clean 6-3, 6-4 victory on Court 3 over No. 84 junior Mao Mushika. Now 3-1 against nationally ranked opponents, Roll has been a revelation on the roster this season, playing fast, confident tennis and rising up the lineup.
Collard then made it a 3-0 dual on Court 5, winning in straight sets. Extending rallies from the baseline and playing clinical tennis at the net, Collard brought home a 6-3, 7-6 (6) win to set her teammates up to clinch the dual.
California then got their lone point on the board on Court 2, where No. 11 senior Berta Passola Folch defeated No. 82 Yang 6-4, 7-6 (7). Of the remaining courts, 1 and 6 went to third sets while Court 2 was in a second-set gridlock, moving slowly as No. 106 Lacy and her opponent inched towards a third set.
Virginia clinched the win on Court 6, where Genis Salas defeated sophomore Naomi Xu — Annabelle Xu’s younger sister — in three sets. Naomi Xu had taken the first set 6-4, but Genis Salas bounced back in the following sets, building her momentum and sweeping the second, before winning the third 6-1.
At the time of completion, No. 20 Annabelle Xu had just started her third set, while Lacy was up 6-5 in the second, having dropped the first set in an 8-6 tiebreak.
After delays caused by the Stanford men’s team’s match going long, the Cavaliers then had another strong performance against the Cardinal (10-8, 6-4 ACC). After taking the doubles point, the same three players — Rolls, Collard and Genis Salas — won in straight sets to secure the sweep.
In doubles, the Cavaliers got off to a quick start on the top two courts, starting 3-0 on both. Collard and Yang built off that hot start for a decisive 6-0 win to put the doubles point in reach, before Xu and Genis Salas finished up a 6-1 win to clinch it. Lacy and Rolls were down 4-3 as the two teams went to singles play.
Genis Salas brought the score to 2-0 on Court 6, with a quick 6-2, 6-0 win. After a slower start to the season, Genis Salas has had a stronger run of form lately, going 4-1 in her last eight singles matches.
Rolls, reigning ACC freshman of the week, then capped off her 2-0 weekend with a 6-2, 6-4 win on Court 3. On a seven-match win streak with 11 wins in her last 12, Rolls’ clinical play has been crucial on the Cavaliers’ winning streak, as she has slowly worked her way to the top half of the lineup.
Collard, now just six singles wins from the elusive 100 mark, secured the clinch on Court 5, defeating junior Sein Myoung 6-2, 6-4. Collard used her great defense and consistency to prolong rallies, forcing her opponent to make mistakes. A huge backhand on deuce led to Collard breaking Myoung for the win.
At the time of completion, Lacy was up 40-30, looking to break her opponent to close the deficit in the second set to 5-3, having dropped the first 6-1. Yang had won the first 6-3 on Court 1, but was trailing 5-3 in the second to No. 30 freshman Monika Ekstrand. Xu had dropped the first 6-3, and was trailing 4-2 in the second when the match was called.
For their final two matches of the regular season, the Cavaliers will return to Charlottesville to face No. 68 Wake Forest Friday and No. 10 NC State Sunday. The dual against the Demon Deacons (11-11, 3-7 ACC) will be senior day for Collard, Xu and senior Meggie Navarro, with the match scheduled to begin at 4 p.m. The Wolfpack (18-5, 9-1 ACC) will then be a tough out Sunday afternoon, boasting four ranked singles players and two ranked doubles pairings.
