Throughout the summer, Charlottesville community members and students took to the streets alongside 26 million Americans to protest police brutality and systemic racism in America. Since then, the nation witnessed record-breaking voter turnout in the 2020 elections, the restriction of chokeholds in 62 percent of the country’s biggest police departments and resistance among government leaders to implement major reforms.

Late last month, the Inter-Sorority Council and Inter-Fraternity Council announced that a previous ban on in-person Greek Life gatherings would be reversed ahead of formal recruitment and bid day events. The IFC said that it will allow later rounds of recruitment and bid day events while the ISC will limit chapters to only hosting reduced capacity in-person bid days. Despite claims from the IFC president that “the Greek community stepped up huge [last] semester and showed that they were willing to sacrifice the parties” to protect public safety, the reversal of this policy will exacerbate the spread of COVID-19 and recklessly endanger our community.

Every fall, incoming students at the University are required to complete a short training module on sexual assault prevention. Sexual assault is an extremely prevalent issue throughout the country, especially on college campuses, where 13 percent of students will experience non-consensual sexual contact. Unfortunately, students at the University also deal with sexual assault at similar rates — for the 2018-2019 school year, the University’s sexual assault and harrassment survey indicated that roughly 13.4 percent of female respondents and 4.2 percent of male respondents reported experiencing sexual assault by physical force. Educational training on these issues can provide students with the tools needed to adequately address sexual harassment and violence. However, the University fails to effectively provide these resources.

Back in June, Virginia’s 5th Congressional District Republicans held a nominating convention in Lynchburg where they voted out incumbent Representative Denver Riggleman. In his place, they nominated Bob Good, a former Campbell County Board of Supervisors member. Many party delegates voted for Good because they felt Riggleman was no longer in touch with their religious conservative principles, and instead chose a candidate who better reflected those beliefs. Those same beliefs are the reason why VA-05 is now considered a toss-up, and why Bob Good is unlikely to have a long career even if he pulls off a win this November.

On a matter as personal and difficult as this, it should be no one’s business. It is the government’s responsibility to ensure that people are able to make informed decisions and have access to proper reproductive health services — not make those decisions for them.

In the isolated world of COVID-19, where I’ve found it all too easy to feel helpless and alone, I realized that the unity of voices among the U.Va.
