This constant state of uncertainty reminds me of when I took piano lessons. As amazing as it feels to finally get a piece right, sometimes the best part about music is what’s in between the start and finish: all the time you spend not knowing and trying to figure it all out.

Well folks, it’s that time of year again: “Juan-uary” is upon us. Yes, ABC’s “The Bachelor” is back, and this season promises drama, heartbreak and many more entertaining, excessive dates. Cue the weekly tweets about how sexy Juan Pablo’s accent is — not that I’m going to argue with that — or about the latest mishap among the 27 lucky vixens vying for his attention.

It’s the Sunday after Thanksgiving break, and I’m exhausted, hungry and have a ton of work that I should have started much, much earlier. I’m standing next to a few other students waiting at the bus stop, when some guy walking by tells us that it has, in fact, stopped running for the day.

Throughout my entire high school career — and, I suspect, the careers of my fellow University students — adults told me again and again I needed to appear “well-rounded” on my college applications. I was expected to do it all. In the name of well-roundedness, for example, I played the clarinet for much longer than I reasonably should have even though I was absolutely terrible and never practiced. An unfortunate number of band concerts later, I’m still recovering from that dark time in my life. No, I don’t want to talk about it.

Everyone always says you find yourself in college. That it’s these next few years that shape who you will be to a greater degree than any other experiences. That I’m somehow supposed to make this grand transformation from an overwhelmed, albeit optimistic, first-year to someone who has her life together, who knows what she wants and has found that one thing she is willing to put her everything into.
