1, 15, 41 — three numbers splashed across the front of hundreds of t-shirts, lovingly etched onto the side of Beta Bridge and formed with sticky notes upon dozens of dormitory windows. They are the jersey numbers of University students and football team members Lavel Davis Jr., D’Sean Perry and Devin Chandler — three students who were killed in a shooting on Grounds one year ago.

Students, faculty and community members gathered inside the Rotunda Thursday afternoon for an event entitled “Democracy Dialogues,” a moderated discussion hosted by the University’s Miller Center and Karsh Institute of Democracy. Speakers discussed topics such as academic freedom of speech across American universities and the broader preservation of civil discourse at large.

The University has seen a large descent on the New York Times’ 2023 College Access Index, a report that ranks the top most selective schools in the nation according to their socioeconomic diversity. The University’s ranking fell from the 50th percentile in 2014 and 2017 to the 25th percentile in 2021 and is currently ranked 248th out of 283 of the most economically diverse public and private universities across the United States.

U.Va. Health has purchased Oak Lawn — a historic home in Fifeville — along with its accompanying five acres of land. The purchase, which is part of an ongoing effort to improve the accessibility of medical treatment in disadvantaged neighborhoods across Charlottesville, was announced in a press release by U.Va. Health on Oct.18. Oak Lawn is located at the intersection of 9th Street Southwest and Cherry Avenue.

A crowd of over a hundred demonstrators from the University and Charlottesville community, all wearing the reds and greens of the Palestinian flag, gathered at the base of the Rotunda steps this Thursday for a teach-in and demonstration entitled “Decolonization is Not a Metaphor: Gaza and Palestinian Liberation.”

Independent journalist and author Abigail Shrier is set to speak at the University for an event entitled “An Evening with Abigail Shrier” hosted by the Jefferson Council and Common Sense Society. Her controversial talking points, including her investigation of what she calls “a trans epidemic” in young girls across America and its subsequent impact on free speech, have warranted a mixed response from the student body.

Democratic candidates running in the upcoming general election addressed efforts to boost voter registration amongst their constituents at the annual “Meet the Candidates” event hosted by University Democrats Wednesday evening in Clark Hall.
