As I leapt back into the cold and fast-moving waters of the Rio Grande in an attempt to quickly dart back into the United States, the only thing I could really think of was, “Swimming to Mexico, on balance, was an extremely poor decision.” Struggling against the current, I got glimpses of my travel buddy John being absorbed into a rapidly forming crowd, amassed to watch what had now become somewhat of a public spectacle.

G-Eazy has always been somewhat of a rap oddity. As the self-proclaimed “rap game James Dean,” G-Eazy first entered into the cultural spotlight in 2011 sporting slim white tees, varsity jackets and a greased pompadour cut. His out-of-time style — a throwback to the vintage culture of the late 1950s/early 1960s — aligned with his music at the time. One of his most popular songs pre-comeup, “Runaround Sue,” was a rip of Dion’s 1961 song of the same name. It’s 2:30 a.m. on a Saturday in February when the squad — which, at this hour, is currently reduced to my buddy John and me — rolls back to my apartment after a big night out. I turn on the TV and see news about the South Dakota pipeline fiasco. While watching, John and I end up having a thoughtful and deep discussion about the importance of civic activism, fighting big oil, how students can get involved — real mature stuff. Delighting in my ability to hold rational discourse at times like these, I fall into a deep and peaceful slumber.
