Babysitting is a blessing and a curse. Getting paid is an obvious benefit — after all, extra cash is the only form of extra weight I welcome. But the job is not always as easy as people make it out to be. Four hours of watching television — sure, sign me up. But when the kids are wildly creative soon-to-be scholars, they often play games that require more mental energy than some of my lectures.

As a child, dreams were a game for me. I would wake up and immediately try to tell someone in the house what happened, only to find 30 seconds into my description that I was making up nonsense to make up for what I couldn’t remember.

Whenever the weather warms in Charlottesville, a mysterious positive energy seems to radiate from Grounds and hum within the veins of University students.

In recent weeks there has been a quiz circulating my news feed on Facebook. Though it was often taken by several “Facebook—but not in real life—friends,” as I like to call them, it nonetheless caught my attention. It claims to match you with the perfect roommate by selecting from a group of your online friends — “you should move in with [insert name here,]” it says.

I’ve just crossed the border into an unfamiliar territory — being single on Valentine’s Day.

How do you tell someone you have three cats without sounding like a lonely spinster?

Rush is weird. Having gone through the recruitment process four times now — once as a rushee and three times as a sorority woman — I can knowingly say it does not get much better.

I have been putting off my job search all semester.

Spending time with my mother is a gift nowadays. While away at college, it’s easy to forget how much I enjoy her presence and how naturally our personalities play off of one another.

Like many other girls at this University, I am mildly addicted to Pinterest.

Late summer brings grand plans for the academic year. I will do all my readings. I will exercise every morning. I will have a job by March. And yet, as I struggle to accomplish even simple tasks on my to-do list, I’m starting to wonder whether I can do anything grand at all.

I never thought I’d feel silly reflecting upon my first-year dorm room posters. They were my pride and joy — a visual display of self-expression for anyone who crammed into my small room. My Katy Perry obsession was in full swing — and that year, she won the wall space popularity contest.

One of my French professors — whose name is Pierre, naturally — routinely enters the classroom after our 15-minute repose carrying a wave of cigarette smoke with him. He is witty and pokes fun at students who he knows will not even understand his insults. Though many are confused by his dry humor, Pierre and I seem to share a mutual understanding — about what, I’m not sure, but he always looks in my direction after making one of his jokes and raises one eyebrow so that it curves upward like a perfect accent circonflexe.

As a child, dreams were like a game for me. I would wake up and immediately try to tell someone in the house what happened — only to find 30 seconds into my description I was making up nonsense due to my lack of memory.

It’s hard to imagine what life would be like without an iPhone. I picture my friends wearing bonnets, churning butter and playing with dolls at a creepily old age. Luckily, we avoided this type of get-together when Steve Jobs gave the Earth his gift. Now, we sit around on the couch engaging in half-minded conversation while simultaneously Facebook-stalking the progression of hairstyles sported by our latest hook-up.

Since moving to Paris, I have experienced several waves of what is commonly referred to as “culture shock.” Certain adjustments to life overseas were expected — stronger coffee, catcalls and copious amounts of bread. These differences in daily habits were surprisingly simple to get used to. When travelling as a tourist with a departure date in sight, it is easier to acknowledge and ignore these differences. As a student, this all changes after about two weeks.

After being in Paris for fewer than 24 hours, so many of my expectations are already shaken. I have surprisingly managed to fit everything into my tiny urban apartment, which is a feat in itself given my pathetic status at the airport.

Alas, the holiday season has officially ended, and with it my excuses to eat and drink as I’d like.

When it came to preparing for my upcoming semester abroad, there seemed to be 300 steps to take before any of it began to make sense or seem real. Through choosing my destination, buying plane tickets and paying tuition, one small formality has presented itself as seriously complicated.

From the moment we are pushed out of our mother’s vagina, ugly and crying, we are taught the value of the birthday. For one day a year, you are given abusively divine power to celebrate and spoil yourself. But shouldn’t we be praising the women who consciously agreed to give life to a seven-pound brick after it lived inside her for nine months rent-free?
