The Thai Student Organization celebrated and shared Thai culture with the University Saturday at their annual Pad Thai Party. Leaders of TSO hoped that the event would allow students to engage with real Thai culture, beyond stereotypical conceptions of it, and that it would encourage more students to join and attend other TSO programming.

Members of the University and Charlottesville community gathered at the Rotunda Friday evening to witness the unveiling of the Rotunda Planetarium. The planetarium is a tribute to Thomas Jefferson’s original vision for the purpose of the Rotunda. In addition, the installation attempts to remind people of the stories surrounding the Rotunda’s creation.

Amidst the madness of midterm woes and mid-semester projects, students joined together to celebrate Latinx culture at “Bailemos! La Vida es Una Fiesta” — an event put on by the Latinx Student Association and sponsored by the Salsa Club and the International Residential College. “Bailemos” translates to “Let’s dance,” and “La vida es una fiesta” means “Life is a party” in English.

Thomas Jefferson’s ideal for the academical village is to extend learning beyond the classroom and into the home, particularly illustrated in a unique housing option for students — residential colleges, which are meant to be combined spaces for living and learning for both peers and faculty members. The University has three residential colleges — Hereford, Brown and the International Residential College — each with their own theme and central focus.

There are countless organizations on Grounds aiming to make the University a better place, but for Colombia native Karolina Naranjo, one in particular has had the greatest impact on her time here in Charlottesville — the Volunteers with International Students, Staff and Scholars.

It takes a dedicated student to drive to Richmond every Thursday night, and members of the University’s climbing team do just that. In addition to a practice on Monday nights at Charlottesville’s Rocky Top gym, the climbing team carpools to Richmond for practices on Thursday nights, often not returning to Grounds until midnight.

Each page in the story of Asst. Prof. of Nursing Tim Cunningham’s life is more surprising than the last. Starting his career as a professional actor and volunteering across the world with Clowns Without Borders, Cunningham broke into the world of nursing, now holding an assistant professorship in both the drama and nursing departments at the University.

Any University student who has lived in Old Dorms most likely recalls beige and white walls — and not much else. But for a little while, students have been given the opportunity to add some more vibrant colors. Beginning in May, Hancock, Metcalf and Lefevre will be undergoing renovations — but currently they’re undergoing creative transformations.

Last week students stood outside of Minor Hall with a poster bearing the question, “Is God Sexist?” They were asking this polarizing question not to start an argument but to bring attention to an event being hosted this week called Hoos Got Questions.
