OK, so I went a little overboard on the Baltimore Ravens pick last week. The Steelers 27-10 victory Sunday showed me two things: 1) The Miami Dolphins team that the Ravens beat the week before was a joke. 2) Never bet against the Dilfer Theory.

Ah, Charlottesville. It's nice to be back home. I actually was growing tired of waking up at the crack of noon and eating all of the food in my mom's house. The reality of a nine a.m. class yesterday was a bit harsh, but it's not as bad when your basketball team is ranked in the top 10 and truly plays like it.

To whom it may concern (i.e., football players and fans): We MUST beat Penn State on Saturday. There are no ifs, ands or buts about it.

Dear readers, there are a multitude of sports stories out there that deserve our thorough consideration. One of the greatest home-run hitters of all time, Mark McGwire, is retiring. The Titans lost another heartbreaker to the Ravens after coming up a yard short again. College athletes are being suspended left and right. The stories go on and on and on ...

The World Series is over. Oh God, the World Series is over. What am I going to do now at night? Homework? Or, even worse, watch hockey? Well, while I wait for what might be a long, long time for my buddy Nate Newton to get here, I offer my final take on the 2001 World Series.

With the football team in less than exciting form, and the basketball season still a little ways away, I would like to take this opportunity to look at the fastest growing sport at the University.

Back in July, in a column I wrote during Major League Baseball's All-Star Break, I said that the Seattle Mariners would make it to the American League Championship Series. No big prediction there, right? They had a 19-game lead in their division and were playing like champions.

J ordan, Jordan, Jordan. That is the only thing I've heard all week in the sports world. Not that I don't like the guy, but this story has been dragging on for far too long. Fine, he's back. As soon as there are some current highlights or legitimate news items about him, then perhaps we can come back to this story. Until then, here are my thoughts on the comings and goings in sports this week.

RALEIGH, N.C. - After a chaotic first 15 minutes, the No. 2 Virginia men's soccer team settled in and easily disposed of N.C. State on Sunday, 2-0.

I took a very special trip this past weekend. I finally made my pil- grimage to Camden Yards, the home of Cal Ripken Jr. and the Baltimore Orioles.

The National Football League made a grave mistake this past weekend. Canceling the football games on Sunday was a cop-out.

Despite all of the apocalyptic chaos surrounding yesterday's horrific terrorist attack, my editors tell me that the sports page must go on.

So I was sitting in my room last night, hoping, no, praying that an idea for my column would smack me upside my head. I mean, whoever thought coming up with an idea for a sports column every week could be so daunting. Or maybe it's just that I'm lazy, and procrastinating has become a way of life for me.

It's my first week back and already I'm stressed. Well, you might be too if you had a paper due before classes started, or in this case, a sports column. It does bring back the great memories of staying up until ungodly hours trying to figure out what you're going to write about.

So here we are. Another summer is halfway over. The freedom of 16 hour-long, sun-scorched days is slipping away from us again. And with it, the reversion into our former happy-go-lucky lives full of youthful indiscretions.

Some days one hit is enough to win a game. On other days not even 14 will get the job done.

The Virginia women's basketball team has the skill needed for success and the Top-25 ranking to back it up, yet the Cavaliers have failed to find the teamwork or leadership required to reach their potential.

After obliterating the St. Francis Red Flash by 51 points Monday night, the Virginia women's basketball team looks to knock Old Dominion off the edge of the Top 25. Tip-off for Sunday's game at University Hall is scheduled for 2 p.m.

The holiday season is always a wonderful time for reflection, especially for the 2000 football season.
