Imagine being woken up at 6 a.m. by the sound of your door being blown off the hinges, a hand grenade being thrown into your house and a team of soldiers rushing in with their rifles drawn. If your dog barks at these men, it will be shot without hesitation. You might be killed too, should anything surprise one of the soldiers pointing their guns at you.

I FIND The Cavalier Daily's characterization of the University's e-textbook pilot initiative ("Textbook education," Jan. 20) somewhat odd. Digital textbooks are a good thing, but not because publishers get to make more money.

TRAVIS Ortiz's Sept. 28 "Cyber criminals" opinion piece contains a couple of bad analogies that distract from the problems citizens face when it comes to laws and the Internet. The premise of the article seems to be that the Internet is some sort of place where people congregate, which is nonsense - the Internet is a communication system. The article also perpetuates the fictional concept that copyright infringement and theft are equivalent (they are not even in the same category of the law). These analogies are used to paint a picture of an entire criminal world that exists in a place called "cyberspace."

There have been several articles recently published in The Cavalier Daily about ITC monitoring student Internet use. Unfortunately, the articles seem to indicate that students are helpless in this situation, forced to deal with the policy and only able to protest or send letters to the administration about their privacy concerns. But students have another recourse: technology that protects online privacy and anonymity.

This past weekend, the iPad was released by Apple and greeted with multiple articles from almost every news site. It is being hailed by some as a new age for computing and a device that bridges different media outlets in a convenient fact form. Others are slamming it for lacking certain features such as multitasking or USB ports.
