Forensic accountant R. Steven Spitzer released an interim report Monday on the finances of Sweet Briar College. In the report, Spitzer said Sweet Briar College’s finances do not support its decision to close after the 2015 summer session.

The Virginia Policy Review hosted a conference Wednesday night on the publication of a Nationwide Sexual Assault Policy for universities. The conference, which hosted graduate students from various disciplines across the University, was a preliminary step toward publishing a special issue in the Virginia Policy Review early in April 2016.

Charlottesville Commonwealth’s Attorney Dave Chapman filed a motion of nolle prosequi Tuesday in the case against Jesse Matthew and the disappearance and murder of second-year College student Hannah Graham, thereby handing the prosecution over to Albemarle County Commonwealth’s Attorney Denise Lunsford.

The Inter-Fraternity Council elected its new executive board and committee chairs Tuesday night. The new leadership will face heightened scrutiny following the implementation of revised Fraternal Organization Agreements with the University Jan. 16. Transitions will take place in February.

The University will begin to accept applications for Resident Advisors in the next two weeks — with Focused Area applications due Jan. 16th and First Year and Upperclass Area applications due Jan. 27. at noon. The applicants, who will receive decisions in March, will complete a written application and undergo group and individual interviews to determine who will supervise on-Grounds housing.

This week, students and organizations on Grounds are recognizing World AIDS Week by promoting awareness among the University community. Organizations involved include the Student Global AIDS Campaign, the LGBTQ Center, the International Medical Club, Peer Health Educators and ONE — a group which promotes poverty relief and health in Africa. The groups are coordinating to host events to educate students and promote health and safety surrounding AIDS.

The Virginia Joint Legislative and Audit Review Committee released its final report on the costs of higher education in Virginia on Monday. The report analyzed the institutions’ graduation rates and sources of revenue, among other areas of interest, for fiscal years 2002 through 2012.

The University is set to launch a Diversity Data Dashboard that will help make data on diversity at the University more accessible. The Dashboard, which has been in the works for several years, will contain data on race, ethnicity and gender for various groups at the University.

Virginia State Police released a statement Monday confirming a forensic link between second-year College student Hannah Graham’s recent disappearance and Virginia Tech student Morgan Harrington’s death in 2009. Police say forensic evidence taken from suspect Jesse Matthew in the Graham case match evidence found in connection to the Harrington case.

Gov. Terry McAuliffe announced Monday the legislature has reached a budget deal for fiscal years 2015 and 2016. McAuliffe said the deal reflects a bipartisan effort to solve a $2.4 billion deficit caused by lower than expected revenues.

Monday marked the one-year anniversary of the passing of late second-year College student Shelley Goldsmith. In commemoration, the Goldsmith family announced the creation of a new scholarship in her honor. The Shelley Goldsmith Memorial Scholarship, endowed by the Jefferson Scholars Foundation, will act as a grant for a meritorious student from the Southwest Virginia region, where Shelley lived.

As the Fall 2014 semester begins, the University’s chapter of the Pi Kappa Alpha fraternity is working to satisfy requirements issued by its International Fraternity, the University and the Inter-Fraternity Council in hopes of having its charter completely reinstated.
