A recently-published review of “The Revenant” by Cavalier Daily writer Ben Hitchcock claims the film provides very little substance besides wearying amounts of violence and bloodshed. While gore certainly plays a large role in the movie, Hitchcock’s dismissal of the rest of the movie misses out on some truly beautiful moments.

Three years ago, I stumbled upon Macklemore’s and Ryan Lewis’ “My Oh My,” a moving tribute to Dave Niehaus, longtime announcer for the Seattle Mariners. I was instantly hooked. Later, I discovered many of his songs featured uplifting messages or tackled controversial social issues, from gay marriage in “Same Love” to the dangers of drug abuse in “Otherside” and consumerism in “Wings.”

t wasn’t until I hopped on my bike to ride home from The Devil Makes Three concert this past Sunday that I could even form a sentence to describe this band’s appeal. The band’s high-energy bluegrass music was simply astounding.

Charlottesville residents and University students alike filed into the Jefferson Theater to see Shovels and Rope perform last week in the mid-sized, but still personal venue. If you’ve never been to a show at the Jefferson, I would suggest making it a point to do so before you graduate. It’s a beautiful space, large enough to allow for a lively audience and small enough for the artist to really connect with the crowd — and connect is exactly what Shovels and Rope did.
