As the final whistle blew on a 10-0 defeat, the full-capacity crowd at Scott Stadium dispersed and only pockets of maroon and orange-covered Hokie fans remained celebrating in Charlottesville. That November 2017 evening, Micah Kiser should have been distraught with having ended his legendary career at Virginia without ever beating in-state rival Virginia Tech.

After a grueling season filled with numerous highs and lows, the Cavaliers are still seeking glory. It has been exactly one month since the NCAA decided to cancel collegiate wrestling’s national championship and all other championships for both spring and winter sports due to the COVID-19 outbreak. Along with this, Virginia Athletics suspended all athletic activities until further notice. Yet neither of these obstacles are stopping two Virginia star wrestlers in junior Jay Aiello and senior Jack Mueller.

After facing five of the nation’s top 10 teams in conference dual meets, Virginia came into the ACC Tournament primed and ready to compete. As a team, the Cavaliers (8-6, 1-4 ACC) used this experience to rack up 60.5 team points, placing fourth in the ACC Tournament. Individually, over half of their starting wrestlers qualified for the NCAA Tournament.

After nearly an entire month without a dual meet victory, Virginia wrestling’s season was beginning to look dire. Despite starting off the season fluctuating in and out of the NCAA Top 25, the Cavaliers (8-5, 1-3 ACC) began to struggle once conference play began. That being said, Virginia certainly had a tough schedule with its last three opponents all being ranked in the nation’s top 10.

Following a close loss at home to in-state rival No. 7 Virginia Tech Jan. 31, Virginia wrestling travelled north to the Fitzgerald Field House for a dual against ACC opponent No. 10 Pittsburgh.

After losing all but two of their matches against No. 5 NC State last weekend, Virginia wrestling faced ACC rival No. 7 Virginia Tech Friday night at John Paul Jones Arena. The Cavaliers (7-4, 0-2 ACC) were huge underdogs against the Hokies (9-1, 1-1 ACC) and came into the match having lost nine of their last 10 duals against Virginia Tech. Furthermore, six of the starting 10 Hokies are ranked individually, compared to just two for Virginia.

After two dominant home meets in Memorial Gymnasium against Tennessee-Chattanooga and Virginia Military Institute where Virginia triumphed by a total margin of 73-12, the Cavaliers (7-3, 0-1 ACC) traveled to Raleigh, N.C. to open ACC play against No. 5 NC State.

After returning from a brief winter break, No. 22 wrestling placed second at the 40th edition of the Virginia Duals. Held in the Hampton Coliseum, the Duals are one of the most coveted tournaments in the state of Virginia for both high school and collegiate level wrestlers. Notably, this marks the second year in a row that Virginia finished as the runner up at the Virginia Duals.

Former Virginia strong safety Juan Thornhill impressed spectators and scouts with a strong performance at the NFL Combine Monday, held at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis, In. Held from Feb. 26 to March 4, the Combine is an invite-only showcase of the some of the best players entering the NFL Draft, who undergo a series of physical and mental tests in front of NFL coaches, general managers and scouts.
