One of the University’s most notable recent accomplishments, in my mind, is the push for environmental sustainability on Grounds. New buildings are being constructed with higher green standards. Dorms participate in competitions for energy conservation. The U.Va. Sustainability organization has increased Earth Week festivities and initiated a Sustainability Forum to encourage ongoing discussion of conservation and green living across the University. Green organizations across Grounds are beginning to team up with student ministries and other groups that share the same environmental values, realizing the strength in a united voice. The list, quite simply, goes on and on.

I am seriously obsessed with fantasy series.

Walking outside this week was like walking into a sauna. The air was sticky, but in a way pleasantly humid after the endless months I spent inside this winter. Rather than pathetically shivering and bemoaning the half-inch of snow on the ground, I swam in sweat all the way to class. I never do seem to be able to dress for the weather correctly.

I don’t have the luxury of getting to see my extended family very often. We’re spread across a vast swath of the United States, and though we keep in touch by all the modern marvels of Skype and smoke signals, actually getting together is something special.

There’s something oddly comforting about studying in a cubicle.

Every once in a while I like to delude myself into thinking that I’m classy. In my imagination, I’m the type that wakes up early, takes a cup of coffee to the porch to read the paper while petting my cat. I retire every evening to my linen-tableclothed dining room, where I drink a crystal glass of crisp white wine and respond to handwritten letters. Occasionally, I’ll pick up a hat and basket and stroll to the market to choose vegetables for the week, treating myself to a cheese Danish, or perhaps a bunch of tulips.

I’ve come to terms with having a complete mental breakdown roughly three times a semester. It’s practically a ritual now, where everything suddenly piles up and engulfs me, dragging me to the bottom of a lake of self-pity.

I recently read a quote by the intrepid explorer Richard Francis Burton that struck me: “One of the gladdest moments of human life, methinks, is the departure upon a distant journey into unknown lands. Shaking off with one mighty effort the fetters of Habit, the leaden weight of Routine, the cloak of many Cares and the slavery of Hope, man feels once more happy.”

Ah, that faint smell in the air. That hard edge on the corner of your mind. That growing feeling pushing down on you when you sit. Yes, we’re all feeling it. Finals are just around the corner.

I’ve never really been a birthday person.

Whoever came up with the idea of the “Things to Do Before We Graduate” list needs to be given a hug.

I came home for break, exam-weary and craving home-cooked food, desiring nothing more than to lie on my back while drooling in the general direction of the TV. The drive into town filled my head with fantasies of sleeping in late and ignoring the ever-growing pile of homework spilling out of my backpack.

Until two weeks ago, I had been a vegetarian for about six years. Beyond that, I had never eaten seafood — not even before I became a vegetarian.

Growing up, I considered myself a regular tomboy. Looking back, I suppose this was mostly attributable to the one miserable afternoon I spent watching NASCAR with my dad and the plethora of worn jerseys passed down from my cousin.

For Valentine's Day, my hallmates and I reminisced about our past flings and crushes. Everyone had their own stories, which caused a great deal of laughter and teasing, but I sensed a common theme running throughout.

"I am a College Student Now, and I Know Everything." We've all seen it, most upperclassmen have even experienced it themselves and I am beginning to notice the growing trend among my fellow first years. They seem to say, "Yes, we are here."
