As the Virginia general election election draws closer, University organizations are working to bring students to the polls, through registration efforts or more creative efforts — like offering students rides to polling locations on golf carts. Key issues for this election include abortion rights, climate change and the role of parents in education, among others.

The Board of Visitors’ Finance Committee provided updates on the fiscal year 2024 budget and approved amendments to the 2024-2026 Biennial Budget and the 2023 State Six-Year Institutional Plans for the University and the College at Wise during the meeting Thursday. The Board also discussed improved safety measures on the Corner and tuition rates ahead of the next Board meeting in December.

U.Va. Health has reported a rise in COVID-19 cases, matching an increased hospitalization rate across the country. According to NBC29, U.Va. Health admitted an estimated 2.7 patients a week for COVID-19 in August, and that number has since risen to 11.4.

New students filed into seats on the lawn Sunday to hear advice and guiding words from faculty and student speakers at convocation. Students dressed up for the event, wearing colorful dresses and polo shirts, despite the heat.

Sam Sanders will enter the position of city manager starting August 1, following the City’s two year struggle to fill the position. Sanders said that he hopes to provide clear communications to the Charlottesville community as well as a sense of stability in the role.

The Charlottesville-Albemarle Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals has hired shelter volunteer Sue Friedman to serve as interim executive director after Angie Gunter was placed on administrative leave for improper care of the animals and employee mistreatment. Friedman will serve in the interim position with goals to improve their practices regarding animal welfare as well as increase staff resources, while a larger search is conducted to find a permanent replacement.

To discuss the current state of scientific journalism, the University’s Environmental Institute hosted Chris Mooney, Pulitzer Prize-winning Washington Post journalist and lecturer at Yale’s School of the Environment, to discuss strategies for better reporting on science, including the importance of educating the public about science through a story Monday.

The University’s Armenian Cultural Student Association is currently putting on a week of event programming in remembrance of the Armenian Genocide. To kick off the week, students and community members were invited to place flowers and candles at the site of the Berlin Wall on Grounds throughout the day Monday. There was a moment of silence held at the site of the vigil later that evening.

University President Jim Ryan ran the duration of the Boston Marathon’s 26.2 miles wearing a navy shirt with the last names of the victims of the Nov. 13 shooting and the words “U.Va. strong” — Ryan donned this tank in honor of Devin Chandler, Lavel Davis Jr., and D'Sean Perry.

Creigh Deeds, Virginia state senator for the 25th district, and Sally Hudson, Virginia delegate for the 57th district, participated in a candidate forum on-Grounds Monday evening. Hudson and Deeds covered their positions and beliefs on a number of issues, including gun violence and public school curriculum. Hudson is currently challenging incumbent Deeds in the state senate race. Deeds has been representing Virginia District 25 since 2001.

U.Va. Dine has implemented a customized Ramadan ordering program that provides participating students with meal accommodations by allowing meal orders to be placed through Grubhub two to three days in advance, with an expanded pickup time between 5 p.m. and 10 p.m. The program has been met with mixed responses from participating students, including some who have cited low quality food.

Charlottesville’s new zoning ordinance — the official designations by which the City is broken into legal classifications of land use — will legalize increased housing density by allowing taller buildings with more units per square acre. City officials and advocates for affordable housing hope the changes will alleviate Charlottesville’s ongoing housing crisis.

The Charlottesville School Board recently finalized their decisions to formally rename Clark Elementary School and Venable Elementary School to Trailblazers Elementary School and Summit Elementary, respectively. The announcement follows a long debate over the outgoing names, which honor historical figures with racist histories.

A little bit of rain did not stop throngs of princesses, pirates and pop stars from flocking to the Lawn Monday night for the first Trick-or-Treating on the Lawn since 2019. Following two years of cancellations due to the pandemic, the event saw high turnout as Lawn and Pavilion residents handed out candy to students, community members and their children.

As Virginians prepare to vote in Tuesday's midterm elections, many out-of-state students have reported challenges with the often tedious registration process. With around 33 percent of the University population coming from states other than Virginia, these students face the choice of traveling home to vote, requesting an absentee ballot in their home state or switching their registration to Virginia —- along with uncertainties of registration confirmation.

As early voting began in Virginia Sept. 23 and Election Day nears Nov. 8, students have started heading to the polls to complete their civic duties. In preparation for the elections, student groups are focusing on efforts to increase voter engagement and turnout.

The University released the 2022 Annual Fire Safety and Security Report Friday. The report outlines crime statistics from 2019 to 2021 and demonstrates an increase aggravated assault, robberies and sexual harrasment within the last year.

Students crossing the bridge from Nau Hall to New Cabell or exploring the McIntire School of Commerce may stumble across one of six newly-installed memorial benches on Grounds. These simple, curved white pieces of concrete — engraved with the names of women and members of other marginalized groups deeply involved in the University — were recently installed as part of fourth-year Commerce student Sanjeev Kumar’s Memorial Benches Initiative.
