The ACC Championship Bracket was released Sunday, and Virginia softball has earned the 4-seed in the tournament — the program’s highest seed since being seeded No. 2 in 2010. The Cavaliers (32-17, 15-9 ACC) will take on No. 5 Clemson in the first round in Durham, N.C, earning the seeding nod over the Tigers (33-16, 15-9 ACC) thanks to a series victory over Clemson in March.

As Name, Image and Likeness and recruiting restrictions continue to change amidst calls to properly compensate collegiate athletes, especially those in high-earning sports, a new law signed April 18 allows Virginia schools to compensate players for NIL rights. The University played a major role in drafting the bill, which takes effect July 1. Following an upset series victory on the road against No. 3 Duke, Virginia couldn’t muster the offense to overcome Virginia Tech Tuesday night in the second iteration of the two teams’ midweek matchups. The No. 15 Hokies (36-9-1, 17-4 ACC) dominated the Cavaliers (30-16, 13-8 ACC) in all aspects, rolling to a 6-1 win in Blacksburg.

After a Commonwealth Clash loss to Virginia Tech Tuesday, and a devastating 12-inning loss Friday, Virginia managed two one-run victories Saturday to take two of three games against Duke in Durham, N.C. The Cavaliers (30-15, 13-8 ACC) had won just one game in 13 prior matchups against the No. 3 Blue Devils (39-6, 17-4 ACC), who had not lost a series in 2024 until facing Virginia.

Tuesday night, Virginia lost to Liberty at Palmer Park. Senior pitcher Mikayla Houge threw a complete game, seven full innings of one-run ball, allowing just two hits and one walk. For the Flames, freshman pitcher Katie Love also threw a complete game but allowed six hits. The difference in the game was a single in the fifth inning, followed up by a stolen base and two consecutive groundouts to score the Liberty runner. Despite allowing no extra base hits and issuing just one free pass, Houge notched a loss for Tuesday’s performance, a continuation of a troubling trend — the offense struggles to match the success of the pitching staff, leading to low-scoring losses and missed opportunities.

Palmer Park was rocking Sunday afternoon in Charlottesville as Virginia defeated Clemson to take the three-game weekend series. Prior to the first game of the series Friday afternoon, the Cavaliers (20-10, 7-5 ACC) were winless against the No. 11 Tigers (22-9, 6-3 ACC) in ten previous meetings — a win Friday and another victory Sunday sealed Virginia’s first game and series victories against Clemson in school history.
