Student Council approved its summer budget at the general body meeting Tuesday night after a lengthy discussion concerning the proper allocation of funds. More specifically, several representatives raised questions about the use of student activity fee funds for discretionary spending.

After serving as Student Council vice president for administration for about a month, third-year College student Sydney Bradley has resigned from the role. In an emergency piece of legislation Tuesday, Student Council President Alex Cintron, who is a third-year College student, appointed Taylor Overton, a second-year College student and former chief of cabinet, to the position.

Student Council discussed its summer budget at its General Body meeting Tuesday night. The summer budget allocates funds for all Student Council activities and initiatives between May 4 to the beginning of September when the annual budget is approved. As it currently stands, the total amount allocated to Student Council for this summer is $22,121, and funds will be split between the various committees in Student Council based on their needs.

Armin Langer — a German author and founder of the Salaam-Shalom Initiative, an activist organization seeking to facilitate coexistence between people of Muslim and Jewish faiths — spoke about cultural tolerance Thursday evening in New Cabell Hall. Langer’s lecture served as the opening for the Sanctuary and Belonging Initiative, hosted by the University’s Center for German Studies.

After a transition ceremony Friday to swear in newly-elected leaders, the Student Council held its first meeting of the term Tuesday in which the Representative Body confirmed second-year College student Ellie Brasacchio as the chair of the body and approved four new Contracted Independent Organizations.

Student Council approved two new Contracted Independent Organizations at its general body meeting Tuesday. The bill granted CIO status to the Virginia Woodsmen Team and the Medical Dancers. With CIO status, these organizations can now request funding through Council and reserve meeting space on Grounds, along with other benefits.

University Law Prof. Margaret Riley addressed Student Council on proposed changes to a policy regulating the use of University property by outside speakers at its meeting Tuesday. Student Council President-Elect Alex Cintron also announced his incoming chief of cabinet and the Representative Body amended and tabled a bill that would require members to dismiss themselves from their position on the council if found guilty of an Honor or University Judiciary Committee violation.

Researchers, state policymakers and educators from Virginia’s colleges and public school systems gathered at the Curry School of Education on Tuesday to discuss the details, causes of and solutions to the state’s teacher shortage crisis. Speakers included Virginia Secretary of Education Dietra Trent and State Superintendent for Public Instruction Steve Staples. Third-Year Council hosted Food for Thought, a social garden party, in Garden IX Tuesday evening. The event was intended to bring students together and commemorate the Class of 2019’s stories.
