Life is about relationships. For Sandy and Rob Archer, many of those relationships began in Charlottesville. The two met at the University, founded their first business in Charlottesville and have since raised a family here.

Food can tell a story — the story of people, the story of a place or the story of a culture. At the University, for example, the Gus Burger from The White Spot invokes images of students enjoying late night eats, while the surrounding vineyards and breweries tell the stories of local businesses in the Virginia countryside.

This semester, the Corner and other locations have seen an increase in the popularity of trivia nights. While Mellow Mushroom has held a weekly trivia night since its opening 16 years ago, other locations — such as Crozet Pizza and World of Beer — have begun opening their doors to Charlottesville’s trivia enthusiasts.

Winner, winner, chicken dinner. For third-year College student Alex Cintron, this saying carries many layers of meaning relating to the organization he founded last semester, Wings for Wahoos. After hearing the story of a student who successfully persuaded University Dining Services via social media to serve waffles on her birthday, Cintron wondered just how responsive University Dining could be to student input.

Disgusted by the events of Aug. 12, a group of students from the University planned Together We Run, a series of runathons to be held in Charlottesville, Washington D.C., Miami, Fla., Austin, Texas and Charleston, S.C. The runathons are meant to send a clear, unified message against the hatred displayed by the neo-Nazis and white nationalists, who staged the August rally in Charlottesville that turned chaotic and violent.

Born on a farm in a coal mining and farming community in western Pennsylvania to parents who lived through the Great Depression and the second World War, Assoc. Architecture Prof. Phoebe Crisman grew up learning how to live within her means. Sustainable living was not a lifestyle choice for her family, but an economic necessity. Her parents taught her to eat all the food on her plate and to not waste anything. Her family grew their own food, her dad hunted and they canned.

It’s that time of year again — when Grounds are overrun by tour groups, Newcomb Dining Hall becomes packed and the bookstore is full of proud parents purchasing University t-shirts and bumper stickers. It’s the first day of Days on the Lawn.
