The University music scene is known for its popular fraternity bands, its well-attended house shows of Indieheads — a student-run music organization — and its cult-like a cappella culture. However, one crucial aspect of the music industry is missing from this picture — music production. Noticing that there was no dedicated space to appreciate this artform amongst the University’s plethora of extracurricular offerings, fourth-year College student Lennon Newsom and third-year College student Owen Larson took it upon themselves this fall to start Hoos Producing, the University’s first music production club.

From homegrown folk acts to viral indie rock groups, The Southern Cafe & Music Hall showcases new talent with unbridled passion every week. This past Thursday was no exception when the University’s own budding musicians took the spotlight. Student bands Boscobel and Looseleaf showed off their unique styles opening for The Barons, a locally beloved traveling rock band. Locals and University students alike filled the crowd, loving all three distinct bands throughout the three hour long show.

Blame it on my childhood obsession with “Wizards of Waverly Place,” my teenage obsession with “Gossip Girl” or my current obsession with Woody Allen movies — whichever you choose, I have always identified as a “city girl.” Despite never actually living in one, I considered the quick wit, chic fashion and curt attitude that define city life as key personality traits. This part of my self-image took a hit when I moved to Washington, D.C. this summer and failed to find my footing. Now, after spending 10 weeks in a big city, I am ready to admit that maybe I’m not a city girl after all.

While almost a year has passed since I studied abroad at the University of Oxford last summer, glimpses of my time there have slipped into my mind every day since. Whether I’m cramming for an exam in Clem or catching up with a friend on the Corner, all of my favorite memories from abroad flash through my head like an infinite film reel.

I have gone to Bodo’s Bagels almost every day of the academic calendar for the last two years. Being a “creature of habit” has always suited me, but my daily Bodo’s trip has taken this to a new level. I go every day at noon to order a plain bagel with plain cream cheese. I get it “to-go,” but I eat it there, and I use the bag as a placemat. No matter what changes in my life — with school, my friends or my love life — my daily stop at Bodo’s is one constant, always providing me comfort, joy and, of course, bagels.

Sitting down last week under overcast skies and impending rain, the unfortunate weather couldn’t dull third-year College student Jack Stepanian’s enthusiasm as he eagerly discussed his anticipation for headlining The Southern Cafe & Music Hall in the Downtown Mall Thursday. The performance will act as a release show of sorts, as his first EP “Made for Us” drops the same night at midnight.

Gathered in the cozy ambience of the Southern Café & Music Hall, University students joined Charlottesville locals Saturday for a night of live music. While the Charleston-based headliner Easy Honey showed off their polished sound and unique energy, both opening acts — Jack Stepanian and Celler Dwellers — stole the show and captivated the audience.

As the sun painted the sky orange and pink, twinkle lights glistened over The Whiskey Jar’s outdoor patio on the Downtown Mall Wednesday. The tones of classic rock and roll and the rhythms of blues swept across a buzzing audience of packed tables and standing spectators as couples danced sweetly on the periphery.

Plopped on the couch of their Fairfax, Va. apartment, the four members of Cougar Beatrice — all of whom graduated from the University in 2020 — detailed the highs and lows of the live performances, original music and friendship that color their post-grad lives.

It's not often that up-and-coming New York indie rock bands have a connection to Charlottesville. Arcy Drive, however, gives the city a claim to fame through their debut album cover — a polaroid of the four friends plopped on the side of the road after their vintage green van broke down in Charlottesville before their show last summer.

As members of the University community walked into the University’s Student Activities Building last weekend to watch the First Year Players’ production of “Big Fish,” they were met with exposed overhead pipes, cracked tile floors and bare concrete walls. But inside this brick box, the crew dashed around with props, students quickly lined up rows of chairs and the cast’s backstage hubbub swirled around the room. Youthful energy saturated the space, surrounding the audience with anything but stale air.

Gathered around a picnic table one sunny afternoon last week, the members of student band The Big Slice chatted all things music and memories. From reminiscing on their origins to spilling about their recent release, the band enthusiastically recapped their journey.

The beaches, booze and beauty of spring break have come and gone. Dreadful and distressing midterms are somehow rapidly approaching yet again. The weather app displays a sea of mid-40s and light drizzle. March Madness? More like March sadness.
