The University’s Office of Sustainability celebrated five students, one professor and four staff members with Sustainability Leadership Awards for their efforts to advance President Jim Ryan’s U.Va. 2030 Sustainability Plan, which has the goal of making the University carbon neutral by 2030 and free of fossil fuels by 2050. The Community Climate Collaborative and the Loaves & Fishes Food Pantry also received Sustainability Leadership Awards for their commitment to environmental sustainability by providing clean energy and combating food insecurity in the Charlottesville area.

The University’s Office of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion is facing scrutiny from two online news publications after OpenTheBooks — a nonprofit organization dedicated to government transparency — reported that the University currently has 235 DEI-related employees, totalling $20 million in University spending. The University contests this report, claiming that these numbers are highly inflated.

The Board of Visitors’ Academic and Student Life Committee spoke on the recent U.Va. Apartheid Divest referendum — which calls on the University to submit itself to an external audit of its investments and divest from companies profiting from Israeli human rights violations — in its meeting Thursday evening. The Board also voted to approve new degree programs and discontinue ones with low student enrollment.

Following a partial opening at the end of the fall 2023 semester, the Fried Center for the Advancement of Potential — a new, state-of-the-art gym that combines fitness and physical therapy — is now fully operational. Students with chronic injuries, as well as others who feel they could benefit from the functionality-focused exercise regimen, are invited to sign up for one-on-one appointments with the Fried Center’s staff of strength and conditioning specialists and trained student interns.

The University Honor Committee will host an Honor Week full of student events from Feb. 4 through Feb. 9. These events, such as the dinner with Honor Alumni, an information ethics seminar and “cookie chats” with Honor representatives, are designed to foster student engagement with the Committee.

The University welcomed students and their families to a celebration of the Class of 2025 at Paramount Theaters from 11 a.m. to 12 p.m. Sunday. The event featured faculty and student speakers, a performance by the Hullabahoos and a post-ceremony reception after students picked up their class rings.

The University will welcome family members of current students to Grounds this upcoming weekend for the annual Family Weekend, during which Orientation and New Student Programs will be hosting a series of events and programs, from a drag show to a Dome dinner, spanning Nov. 3 to Nov. 5.

University students welcomed a stream of witches, warlocks, pirates and princesses of all ages in the annual Trick-or-Treating on the Lawn event. On a chilly Hallween night, young Trick-or-treaters lined the Lawn in search of treats from 5 to 7 p.m following a week packed with other spooky activities.

Morgan Bettinger, Class of 2021 College alumna, settled a lawsuit against the University after being sanctioned by the University Judiciary Committee for a 2020 comment concerning Black Lives Matter protestors blocking traffic in downtown Charlottesville. The lawsuit alleged that President Jim Ryan, the University Board of Visitors and former Dean of Students Allen Groves violated her free speech and due process rights by permitting and assisting in her sanctions.
