All of us at the University are familiar with course requirements — first and second writing requirements, general education requirements, specific major and minor requirements and so on. If you scroll through SIS, you can find a list as long as a CVS receipt telling you all the classes you have taken and still need to take.

As the train pulled away from the Providence station, I shifted back in my seat and popped in my headphones in hopes of a little shut-eye on the 10-hour train ride back to Charlottesville. I was drifting off into that subpar sleep of travel where the closest thing you can get to a nap is to close your eyes and drift off for a moment before your head slips from the window and begins to tilt forward. I was just raising myself back from one of these periodic jolts when an announcement over the loudspeaker caught my attention.

I am a big fan of a good list. My life is filled with checklists — homework, errands, miscellaneous “to do” items — some are scribbled in the margins of my notebooks or on random scraps of paper, but the majority of these lists can be found in my daily planner. Three years ago, I stepped off a Northline bus into the cold February air so foreign to me as a California native. Having just come back from winter break and now a few weeks into my second semester, I had a newfound determination to shake the homesickness that had plagued the beginning of my college experience. “What do you recommend — the bacon burger or the half rack of ribs?” the lady asks, looking up from her menu. I smile and tell her the fajitas are my favorite and suggest she try that. What I don’t tell her is that I am a vegetarian, and I don’t have the slightest clue as to what half the menu tastes like. I’m just hoping she will decide quickly so that I can put her order in and then sneak to the back to email my professor the assignment I was supposed to have sent before my shift started. I know what you’re thinking — and yes, I do sound a little fake.

Every year, students enthusiastically flock to UPC’s “Teeny Tiny Petting Zoo” event, oohing and ahhing at the adorable animals. Taking place in late March, the event is an outlet to de-stress from the pressure of upcoming finals, generating a great deal of popularity among the student body. Most of the animals are young farm animals such as goats, chicks, etc. There is a beautiful exchange of love between these animals and students that is indeed therapeutic on both ends.
