Perhaps no time is more pertinent than the final weeks of classes to discuss the colossal waste of time that meetings can be. As the clock ticks on the final hours of the semester, we should strive to save ourselves and our classmates from the pitfalls of the ever-present extraneous meeting.

At the Aspen Ideas Festival in 2012, General Stanley McChrystal debuted the Franklin Project’s idea for a national service year. This year of service to the nation would be “voluntary, but socially expected” for all citizens of ages 18-28. National service would not be limited to the military, but would also include AmeriCorp, Teach for America and other such civic organizations. Naturally, this bold idea stirred discussion and garnered advocates and critics alike. Since first introducing this proposition in 2012 , the idea of compulsory national service has resurfaced several times, and is likely to do so again with the pending presidential election in 2016. In 2014, McChrystal penned an op-ed for the Washington Post calling on “voters donors and [future] candidates” to make a national service year a central discussion for the 2016 election.

Recently, Jennifer Sachs of the student group Hoos for Israel penned a guest column for The Cavalier Daily. This article was a response to the recent annual “Apartheid Week” the Students for Peace and Justice in Palestine held. While the author claims to want to engage in meaningful dialogue regarding the Israel-Palestine crisis, she merely deflects the core issues of the current situation and only seeks to discredit and malign the opposing viewpoint.

It’s five minutes until the end of the lecture. The buzz of backpack zippers amidst the rustle of notebook pages gradually increases as the professor struggles to eke out a few summarizing points over the commotion while a few students dismiss themselves from the class. Almost any student who has attended a medium- to large-sized lecture has witnessed this phenomenon before.

A few weeks ago, Daesh (ISIS) released a video of the execution of captured Jordanian pilot Muadh al-Kasasbeh. In this 22 minute video, “The Healing of the Chests,” Daesh displayed with the best cinematic production they could muster the dramatic execution of al-Kasasbeh, burning him alive in a steel cage.
