Possessing the most experience of anyone on the team, Virginia women's lacrosse midfielder Tiffany Schummer continues to stand on the Virginia defensive line with pride. Coach Julie Myers and her returning players were grateful at the end of last season when the finalist for the 2002 Tewaaraton Trophy -- presented to the outstanding collegiate player in the nation -- decided to return for another year after graduating. If the past month has been any indication, the Virginia men's basketball team would love to have Maryland as its first-round opponent tomorrow. It was in the middle of the televised Duke-Ohio State college basketball game on Tuesday when I found myself consciously searching for a part of the sports world for the first time this semester. Frankly, it hadn't been that important to me as of late. That's right, cold-weather fans, I started surfing the channels to find out if there was a hockey game on.

There's never been a better time to be a runner. That's a statement I'll put in any context, whether your arena is the basketball court, the track or the wooded area behind Observatory Hill.

My grandfather recently handed me the Oct. 7 issue of Sports Illustrated and demanded I read the sports version of the U.S. News and World Report college rankings. These demands always mean the articles are worth reading, but this one was given with more urgency than usual.

I turned to the local sports news network Monday night to see a familiar sight that has delighted me along with countless other Virginia football fans over the years. It was a highlight of our very own senior wide receiver Billy McMullen catching a Matt Schaub pass and picking up yet another first down for the Cavaliers.

Just the other day, as my column deadline closed in, I realized that I would have the task, the chance, really, to articulate the meaning of sports on a day in which we as a country are called upon to reflect our values and mourn those lost in the terrorist attacks last year.
