Littlejohn’s has returned. The iconic Corner sandwich shop reopened April 15 in its storefront on University Avenue after a four-year closure. Their largely unadvertised “soft launch” welcomed students and Charlottesville residents to the refurbished deli, which — despite some modern touches — preserves the memory of the original shop. To maintain the journalistic integrity of our food subsection, we ordered $70 worth of sandwiches and sides to keep our readers informed — and our bellies full. We thoroughly enjoyed our four sandwiches, and we recommend a visit. The revived Littlejohn’s presents a delicious and conveniently located, albeit pricey, food spot that gives patrons a taste of old and new.

Tiramisù is my favorite dessert — a weighty claim for a food writer, I know. But I stand by my words. Delicate yet rich, tiramisù is a beautifully refined dish that delights the palate with just a few ingredients.

More likely than not, you have considered the possibility of finding “The One” as a University student. It may have crossed your mind at the sight of two people walking hand-in-hand on the Lawn, or maybe a couple clad in orange and blue at a basketball game tugged at your heartstrings. Whether or not you have pined for college love, there is no denying that the University has brought together thousands of couples over the years. This Valentine’s Day, two stories of married alumni give hope to all of the hopeless romantics on Grounds.

The chefs at Belle — the beloved brunch locale — show promise with their new French-American “Brasserie” dinner. I dined at Belle during Charlottesville Restaurant Week, where I ate an appetizer, an entrée and a dessert for $35. Though this deal has passed, it’s still worth a visit to Belle to taste their dynamic menu in their cozy, refurbished dining room.

Smyrna is one of Charlottesville’s hottest new restaurants, and for good reason. They serve artfully simple Mediterranean-Aegean dishes in a relaxed, upscale atmosphere. I dined at Smyrna with my mom and dad over Parent’s Weekend. Though Smyrna is pricey, it’s a great spot to visit if your parents are in town to help foot the bill.

Zocalo has been a fixture of downtown Charlottesville since 2003. The restaurant charms patrons with artful Latin American dishes and spirited ambiance. Though an evening at Zocalo comes at a steeper price, Zocalo is a great place to splurge on an intimate dinner or a night out with friends.

Umma’s excites with bold, fresh takes on classic dishes. Relatively new to the Downtown restaurant scene, Umma’s has served Charlottesville diners Korean-Japanese American fusion since 2022. Popular for their novel food combinations — like Southern collards over ramen noodles or caramel apple enveloped in Taiyaki pastry — Umma’s is a great spot to visit with friends for innovative comfort food at a reasonable price.

The Local is a restaurant that lives up to its name. Their chefs have served Charlottesville diners contemporary American fare since 2008. The Local’s dishes celebrate local products, highlighting ingredients from nearby farms, butchers and distributors. It’s worth the moderate expense to taste their food and unwind in their cozy space — the experience will ground you in the flavors and character of Central Virginia.
