The University drama department's production of "The Arctic Circle (and a recipe for Swedish pancakes)" opens this weekend at the Helms Theatre. Written by alumna Samantha Macher and directed by Assoc. Playwriting Prof. Doug Grissom, the play pushes students to work like professionals in what has become an evolving and rewarding experience.

Each year the Virginia Festival of the Book brings authors to Charlottesville to speak about their past work and recent publications. Curator and author, Nato Thompson, spoke about art and activism, in conjunction with his new book: "Seeing Power: Art and Activism in the 21st Century" on Wednesday.

Last Friday, the Culbreth Theater hosted Charles Wright, the 2014-15 U.S. Poet Laureate, and National Book Award winner Mary Szybist. The night featured his "Shrines to Longing," a poetry reading and Q&A. The event was held in conjunction with the Virginia Festival of the Book, a "celebration of books, reading, literacy, and literary culture" according to the website.

Ruffin Distinguished Artist in Residence Claude Wampler’s exhibition “Trailing Spouse” is on display through Mar. 27 in the University’s Ruffin Gallery. Wampler’s exhibition displays mixed media, sculpture, performance, sound, photography, set and costume design and choreography.

The University's Dance Program showcased theitsir Fall Experimental Dance Concert in Culbreth Theatre this weekend. The show dazzled as dancers threw themselves into each creative statement. Each piece was unique, with its own cast of dancers, costumes and scenery. One extraordinary piece after another evoked different passions of the dancers and meanings for each member of the audience.

As University students and community members headed downtown to the Tom Tom Founders Festival event Friday night, the streets buzzed with chatter as the fall block party amassed a couple hundred participants to celebrate art and innovation in the Charlottesville community.

Groove Cat Comedy’s 12-person improv cast took to the outdoor patio of the Three Penny Café last Wednesday, performing in casual dress as they stepped into a variety of scenes, music and personalities. And luckily for the small group of spectators, Tarken Davis — the group director for the night — fueled the show with unparallelled energy.

To celebrate Shakespeare’s 450th birthday, students in the drama department hosted a four-day BARD Fest to honor the great playwright’s famous works. One of the week’s events, Will Talks, featured 10-minute lectures on Shakespeare from five University professors. The lectures offered historical information without losing the audience in 16th century jargon.

First Year Players dazzled its audience with its performance of the musical “Kiss Me, Kate” in the Student Activities Building last week. Based on William Shakespeare’s play “The Taming of the Shrew,” the play was electric. Moving sets, jewel tone tights, and choreography that literally lifted people off their feet kept audience members at the edge of their seats, waiting impatiently for the next sizzling song and dynamic dance routine.

Coming to the University from its previous display in Lyon, France, “Joseph Cornell and Surrealism” is currently on display at the Fralin Museum. Curated by Matthew Affron and Sylvie Ramond, the exhibition places modern artist Cornell in context with the surrealist movement and his peers, featuring almost 100 works from renowned artists such as Salvador Dali, Marcel Duchamp, Man Ray and, of course, Cornell himself.

Downtown came alive for five glorious spring days last week with the sun shining, people swarming and music playing for the Tom Tom Founders Festival. The celebration, held to celebrate Thomas Jefferson’s birthday, included free talks, music, art installations and design events. On Saturday afternoon, concorDance and theMovement Party presented “A Dance Score for the Downtown Mall.”

The University’s improv troupe The Whethermen duked it out with Duke University Improv Friday. The two groups displayed an amazing range of wit, intuition, creativity and mind-reading prowess as they played a variety of improvisation games. The actors allowed the audience to decide many of the factors of these games such as locations, relationships of actors and titles.

Thirty-four original Ansel Adams photographs on display at the Fralin Museum bring visitors through his professional career, from his early work in the 1920s up through his ’50s masterpieces. “The Ansel Adams show: A Legacy,” on display until Oct. 13, provides a window into the life of the American photographer.
