DEAR MOM and Dad,
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. - Although it came down to the wire, the Virginia men's basketball team just couldn't execute. Missed rebounds and turnovers plagued the team throughout the game, and as a result, unranked Florida State ran away with a 66-59 upset victory over No. 22 Virginia at the Tallahassee-Leon County Civic Center last night.
Two Cavaliers named All-Americans
A pumped-up Penn State team and its rowdy fans made their intention to win in Charlottesville loud and clear on Saturday. Even before the starting kickoff, the roar of "We are" came from one corner of the stadium and was answered by the other side with "Penn State," over and over. Self-doubting Virginia fans were drowned out at their own Scott Stadium.
CLEMSON, S.C. - In a match riddled with cheap fouls and gritty tackles, the No. 2 Virginia men's soccer team suffered its first loss of the season last night, 1-0, against No. 8 Clemson in the finals of the ACC tournament. The only other time that Clemson has won the ACC tournament was in 1998 when it beat Duke in the finals.
The No. 2 Virginia men's soccer team finished its regular season undefeated with a 16-0-1 record, and at this weekend's ACC tournament it hopes to continue winning in style. The Cavaliers will take on Wake Forest, which defeated Duke in penalty kicks in the first round of the tournament, at Riggs Field in Clemson, S.C., today at 5:30 p.m.
WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - After two halves of regulation play and four sudden death overtime periods, the Virginia women's soccer team remained tied with Florida State in the semifinals of the ACC tournament on Friday night, 0-0. But the Seminoles advanced to the championship game when they beat the Cavaliers, 3-2, in a round of penalty kicks.
After a successful fall season so far, the Virginia rowing team will host its first home race - but last fall race - of the year Sunday at 10 a.m. on the Rivanna Reservoir. The Cavaliers will host ACC rivals Duke and Clemson as well as Ohio State, Syracuse and Georgetown.
Cavaliers beat Duke, 2-1, in overtime
I t's time to stop arguing over which Virginia quarterback is better. Both Bryson Spinner and Matt Schaub are doing just fine. It's time to stop wondering when star running back Antwoine Womack will return. He made his re-entrance on Saturday and hopefully will make a full comeback next weekend.

The No. 4 Virginia men's soccer team improved its win streak to eight games and shutout streak to six games Saturday night when it knocked off VCU, 1-0, at Sports Backers Stadium in Richmond.
As a referee threw the 11th penalty flag of the night following Billy McMullen's last-second touchdown catch, every Virginia fan probably held his or her breath. Was the Cavaliers' final series of unbelievable plays all for nothing? Was a comeback victory going to be taken away because of yet another illegal move on the part of the Cavaliers?
To some, the postponement of the Virginia/Penn State football game scheduled for last night seemed like an appropriate measure in light of Tuesday's tragedy. To others, playing the game would have been a welcome distraction from a national nightmare.
Virginia football coach Al Groh announced yesterday that senior tailback Antwoine Womack will have surgery on his ankle.
The USA Basketball Women's Collegiate Committee announced Wednesday that Virginia women's basketball coach Debbie Ryan has been named the head coach of the 2001 USA Basketball Women's World University Games Team.
Spending 29 hours on a bus in one weekend doesn't sound like much fun, but the Virginia women's crew team came out of it all right.
Cavaliers Conor Gill, Mark Koontz and Chris Rotelli were selected as members of the 2001 All-ACC men's lacrosse team as chosen by the conference's four head coaches.
After both teams took the lead on the first day of competition, the Virginia men's outdoor track team finished third and the women's team finished fourth, at the ACC outdoor championships held at Disney's Wide World of Sports Complex in Orlando, Fla., this weekend.
