It's a warm April afternoon. The sun is turned on full blast, its intensity melting away midterm stress and post-Spring Break blues. Flip-flop-clad feet stroll across the freshly-cut grass on the Lawn, where Frisbees outnumber books and a lazy nap under a tree is suddenly a better idea than doing schoolwork.

Sitting outside on a Friday afternoon in November, Mempo Giardinelli's gray beard is lit by sunshine coming through the few remaining leaves on the trees. He looks toward the sidewalk and waves "hola" to a passing student.

The usual hum of people fills the walkways of the Downtown Mall on a Friday afternoon. Students, parents and children bustle about with their shopping bags, occasionally laughing or pausing for a cup of coffee and a mid-afternoon snack. However, halfway down the Mall, if one looks closely, they can see red and white block letter signs that read, "Books" and an arrow pointing down to the two small, dimly lit windows a few feet above ground level.

Over 100 years ago, the University had a different face: In the Civil War era, upon hearing that Fort Sumter had surrendered in 1861, students in the Southern Guard broke into the Rotunda at night and, climbing along the dome, grasping a lightning rod, hung a hand-sewn Confederate flag.
