Any self-respecting ’90s kid knew and loved the compact collections of pop songs from NOW That’s What I Call Music. I’m sure many of us have at least five still hoarded somewhere. The digital forces of iTunes and Spotify have made such compilations essentially obsolete, and yet Now 45 was released just last month.

The joie de vivre embodied by French filmmakers — especially during the silent era and the dawn of the New Wave — has profoundly altered the course of cinematic history. Fortunately for readers who have not yet been exposed to the brilliant works that continue to emerge from this separate universe of film, the University’s French Department is introducing the U.Va. French Film Festival, which will run Feb. 21-24 and will feature five critically acclaimed motion pictures.

Most University students consider the Academical Village People to be the most outrageous of the wide selection of University a cappella groups; in fact, some may write them off as the goofballs of the choral community. But the all-male group’s most recent concert, Baracktoberfest II: The Ultimitt Showdown! made short work of any misconceptions about the AVP’s legitimacy. In addition to their standard good showmanship, they demonstrated vocal talent and a new complexity of composition at their concert last month.

Guided by a list of 113 things to do before final exercises in May, fourth years strive to take advantage of everything U.Va. has to offer before the time comes for them to wear the honor of honors. The list is fairly comprehensive and includes several activities that can be tricky or even dangerous to pull off. Some of the items, on the other hand, require virtually no work at all — indulging in a scoop of Arch’s frozen yogurt, for instance.

If you haven’t seen ABC’s Modern Family before, put aside this article and start watching it right now. The show has one of those great premises that‘s funny because it rings true. Even if your family doesn’t resemble any of the three types on display, you will undeniably recognize the characters: the over-the-hump gramps who clings to youth, the goofball dad, the controlling mom, the 10-year-old romantic who’s wise beyond his years, the son who feels he never lived up to his father’s expectations … you get the picture. Together the characters create one of the most comically twisted and heartfelt shows on television today.

The beauty of the Avett Brothers is their approachability. You hit the chorus, and you can’t help but sing along. You listen to their lyrics, and you fall in love. You can get exactly what you want out of their music because they’re patient. The group’s folksiness is a fun, indie façade.

Flaunting impeccably tailored three-pieces and chic skinny ties, the stars of USA’s Suits do credit to their show’s title. Beyond the snappy outfits of its cast, Suits, like most of the USA network’s offerings, succeeds as a piece of harmless and sometimes brilliantly funny entertainment.
